Years ago, before APFS arrived on the Mac, I used to use Data Rescue with some success. I have never done such a thing on Windows, but the day for it may have come.
Part of why I don’t have more information is that it’s a friend’s hard drive. Withe the right utility software, I may be able to do it myself. That’s why I started a new thread exploring that tack.
This is a follow-up to my earlier post. It may not be necessary to send the drive in. Maybe running a utility program on it would suffice. What’s the best solution?
My PC is currently on 22H2. I just went to Settings → Windows Update, and it proceeded to download 23H2. How do I prevent that from installing and get it to never automatically install itself again?

Everything takes forever. Images in the Microsoft Store take a couple of minutes to load (it’s not the network speed). Sections in Settings take a long time to fully show. Logging in is very slow. Everything is super sluggish.
How do I benchmark the drive?
