  1. the miracle! cure for my new-old Toshiba HDD

Update: I bought a very similar Toshiba external HDD for USB backups, though this one was 7200rpm and the manufacture date was a few years more recent. It also had a high Pending Sector Count, like the miracle-cured drive. But the 'hours used' for this new-old one was high. That's prbly why...
  2. Update Reflect, or not?

Sometimes a software update changes things so that the next update becomes automatic and mandatory. That's what Microsoft did after they bought Skype years ago. So maybe it's better to not update Reflect anymore, and thereby be able to keep using it even if Macrium disables free versions in a...
  3. best free backup program that does incrementals?

Ahaa, there it is. That's very convenient that way. More so than Macrium. Merry Christmas to you, GCG!
  4. the miracle! cure for my new-old Toshiba HDD

I remember from years ago that there are entities called particles, which are OOProgramming [objects]. Then you can use code to create them and move them according to formula. That tornado is dramatic.
  5. [privacy] AOMEI BackUpper uses google spyware

Prolly most here don't care, but I do. The Glassware traffic monitor program alerts on any 1st network connections made. It shows that AOMEI contacted google's g-a 3 times upon install, then again after my first backup finished. (Glassware thus let's you spot that without using a regular...
  6. the miracle! cure for my new-old Toshiba HDD

Yep, that's what I'd meant by masking. I'm going to try the paint Shop Pro. Thanks. [edit: oh, crap: ]
  7. best free backup program that does incrementals?

Update: Also adding in Hasleo, which took 43 minutes for a 123Gb file. Thanks @LeLibran and @GCG1000. [But I can't see where to specify Incremental backup.]
  8. the miracle! cure for my new-old Toshiba HDD

Cool. What software did you use, Ghot? Howsit show behind the Bonsai tree? Masking? (My intention all along was to eventually be putting various things on the laptop's screen.)
  9. best free backup program that does incrementals?

Today's two full backups, each using Intelligent Sector copy: Macrium took 22 minutes to make a 120GB backup file AOMEI took 90 minutes to make a 176GB backup file. The AOMEI UI is not nearly as slick, but that doesn't matter to me.
  10. the miracle! cure for my new-old Toshiba HDD

That's the mystery. The old external WD HDD was barely used, and not knocked around AFAIK. It mostly sat in a drawer. Not that much different a life than the new-old Toshiba. Except maybe the sealed package on the Toshiba made a difference. If oxidation matters, then maybe a Ziploc should be used.

BC711 NVMe SK hynix 512GB Drive First Benchmarked: 2021-01-23 https://www.harddrivebenchmark.net/hdd.php?hdd=BC711%20NVMe%20SK%20hynix%20512GB&id=27667 [edit below] and Power On Count = 7019 for roughly 40 days that's 175/day. That's weird. Though it's usually set to sleep after 5 minutes, and...
  12. the miracle! cure for my new-old Toshiba HDD

Ohhhh... I'd thought 100% meant that it was 100% good. Because this laptop is pretty new. This is a Scratch-n-Dent Dell, made this year. The processor is new this year, I don't know about the drive. AMD Ryzen 7 5825U "CPU First Seen on Charts: Q1 2022" PassMark - AMD Ryzen 7 5825U - Price...
  13. best free backup program that does incrementals?

It would be nice to be able to do incremental backups, if even only for saving space. I currently do the backups manually with free M Reflect as needed, no scheduling required, for personal use only. AFAIK I don't need any advanced features. I've looked at articles like this one The Best Free...
  14. the miracle! cure for my new-old Toshiba HDD

"And what to my wondering eyes should appear all the errors are gone, no bad sectors are here" This relates to @Bree 's advice on the long format fix. what should I allocate? That worked like a charm. But why is the drive not rated as "100%" by Crystal DI, as is my new laptop's SSD? The...
  15. Solved what should I allocate?

Okay, that makes sense. CDI couldn't at first see the drive. That would have been the real naive report. Then minitools made it visible, and I did a brief/partial surface scan via minitools. That's when SMART observed itself. Only later came my full chkdsk and full surface scan. A lesson...
