  1. Suggestions for a dependable storage drive

One thing I don't notice as having been mentioned: SMR (shingled magnetic recording) vs CMR (conventional magnetic recording) drives. SMR achieves a higher density than CMR, at some performance cost. An enthusiast would avoid SMR. Whether such a drive would be adequate for editing video, I have...
  2. Suggestions for a dependable storage drive

Do both of those contain ordinary SATA drives? Some external drives use other interior interfaces, so the drives can't be extracted and plugged into standard SATA connections.
  3. Suggestions for a dependable storage drive

A SATA "NAS" drive is little different from a common or garden SATA drive. It's spec'd for more continuous use, and may make less vibration.
  4. Building my son a new PC for his birthday

I may be taking this too literally, but the 3800X is a DDR4 CPU. The 9800X3D, DDR5.
  5. Suggestions for a dependable storage drive

Not really. But, for starters: https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?N=50011165%2050011245&d=DAS&Order=1 As I said in post 9, Seagate Ironwolf Pro. It's a NAS drive, which I use as a regular desktop drive.
  6. Building my son a new PC for his birthday

The discussion caused me to check prices. Yikes. I hope I don't need to replace a GPU anytime soon. Or RAM. Or an SSD. I presume that prices will drop if the AI bubble bursts. But that could cause a recession, making funds for stuff like gaming PCs less available.
  7. A D3D11-compatible GPU is required

I failed to notice that. I did a Google search: "is windows gaming on a VM in linux ever done?". The AI response was lengthy. It's unclear to me whether using the VM approach would be feasible for a laptop with a single available GPU. But I'm out. This is wildly far outside of my limited...
  8. Suggestions for a dependable storage drive

Stupid? No. I believe that a typical DAS is external. It may use a faster interface to the PC than would typically be available via Ethernet. (It assumes that your PC supports such an interface, like USB 3.2 Gen2X2 or Thunderbolt.) Years ago, I used a RAID 10 setup that was mounted inside the...
  9. A D3D11-compatible GPU is required

I'm unclear on why you're running a Windows VirtIO GPU version. (It's a software emulation package, primarily used in Linux, apparently.) https://www.qemu.org/docs/master/system/devices/virtio/virtio-gpu.html Do you know what your GPU hardware is? Even if you're using unusual drivers, I assume...
  10. Building my son a new PC for his birthday

Sounds like premium components. I'm curious: which GPU? The 9800X3D has an iGPU, but I doubt that a gamer would stay with that.
  11. Suggestions for a dependable storage drive

Disclaimer: I don't use any external drives for online storage. I wonder whether you'd prefer a DAS (direct attached storage)? If you only need to access it from a single PC, it may be a simpler choice. As to whether you could transfer RAID disks to another NAS or DAS, I don't know. A little...
  12. Solved Windows 11 optional Driverupdate has a bios 1720 for my board - Seems wrong?

This is a bit off to the side, but do you have Armoury Crate installed? Do you have its autoinstall enabled in the BIOS settings?
  13. Solved Windows 11 optional Driverupdate has a bios 1720 for my board - Seems wrong?

In my ignorance, I'm surprised that MS modifies a firmware update that it is passing through from Asus.
  14. Solved Windows 11 optional Driverupdate has a bios 1720 for my board - Seems wrong?

I've never used one, but I believe that Asus sometimes provides firmware updates to Microsoft. Not sure how one would be applied. I'd expect the updater to reboot the PC and apply the update outside of Windows. Regardless, I avoid issuing commands to other forumites.
