Sorry for my late reply.
Hdmi, thanks for suggesting Nana Zip. I will check it out.
Edwin asked..."Do all your archives have the generic 7-Zip icon?".
No, they don't, only the ones I created with 7 Zip which end with the extension .7z. I guess Windows must handle the ones ending in...
Thanks hdmi for sharing the link. The "Show more options" menu was driving me crazy! I just disabled it using the registry editor and rebooted. Now it works the way I want it to!

I have set the default app to 7zip file manager anfd now double clicking works! Hooray! Thank you all!
So the simple solution was to make 7zip file Manager the default programe for opening 7z files.
Kind regards

Thank you Edwin. It worked! 7 zip successfully opened the archive with the password. Problem solved.
So the solution was to make 7zip my default programe for opening 7z files. Then use the right click command to open it. Note the right click option did not previously work before making 7zip the...
Thank you all again for your replies. I have set 7zip as my default app in Win 11 settings but still no joy. When I double click the 7z archive 7 zip will not launch. Windows is blocking it.
Kind regards
Chris
Yes, using a Word doc would be another option. It's good yto know that in theory, 7zip should be able to encrypt and decrupt on this Win 11 build. I have no idea of the meaning of the error message.
"windows cannot complete the extraction. Error 0x80071772 the specified file is encrypted and...
Thanks for your reply. If I try to right click/open with 7 Zip, 7 zip will not launch. Maybe 7 Zip encryption is not compatible with the latest version of Win 11 I am using?
Edition Windows 11 Pro
Version 24H2
Installed on 14/05/2025
OS build 26100.4061

Thank you all for your replies and for the video and suggestions to alternative programes.
It is a text file that I want to encrypt. On Win 10, 7 zip used to work just fine.
On Win 11, 7 zip technically allows me to "Encrypt" the text file with a password to a .7z archive. Double clicking...
I wish to encrypt a sensitive file with a password so that only someone with the password can open, edit and save it. On Windows 10 I used to use 7 zip which was very easy to use. However 7 zip can't encrypt files on Win 11 because they are already encrypted by the OS. Is there a simple way to...
Thank you Freebooster. The video was very helpful. I used the bat file method. It did not work with the International ISO. It DOES work with the ISO downloaded by the media creation tool (USA English). In my case the problem is different. I still have the option to install Windows 11 apps on an...
Thank you Antspants for the further advice. I gave up using a usb. It was a lot easier to use the ISO. I downloaded the ISO file to my desktop and mounted and launched setup. This time I opted to install Win 11 without getting the latest updates. I received the same error message again. Yes it...
In reply to Megahertz, I forgot to use cmd as administrator. Maybe that's why access was denied.
In reply to Antspants, I used the media creation tool to download the correct ISO. (Note the media creation tool only worked after running FreeBooster's bat file to alter the registry. Before that...
Update. I also tried Freebooster's two methods.
For the first method, when I typed in cmd, "F:\sources>setupprep.exe /product server" I got a message that, "access is denied".
The second method using the bat file proceeded well. However during installation the option to keep files and apps is...
Thank you all for your replies. I have made the Rufus USB with the options to bypass hardware requirements.
However when setup runs the option to "Keep Apps" is greyed out and I can't select it. What am I doing wrong?
Kind regards
