I do like the idea of a drive enclosure. I have a Sabrent EC-DFLT 3.5" enclosure which has worked fine in the past. I'm about to use it again for a different project (cloning a 500 GB HDD). I'll see how it goes.
I did as others had suggested and opened the case of this failed 7 year-old WD My Passport USB drive. It is not obvious to me what if anything can be done now.
Shuck it or Chuck it?
Hello Steve,
I have used the Rescuezilla bootable USB drive to clone disks, but I don't know if it can do what you are suggesting. It seems to be a similar concept though.
The consensus is that the drive is dead. Sadly, that conclusion is correct. The data on the drive is not critical. I will purchase a new drive rather than fussing with replacing the controller board. I've just noticed that the drive does make an occasional clicking sound so replacing the...
I have a Western Digital USB portable drive that has become corrupted and I'm trying to repair it.
1. It appears in the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" menu
2. It does not appear in File Explorer
3. The initialize disk window pops up when I open Disk Management. Attempts to initialize...
SOLVED!
I'm embarrassed to explain but here is the recap. After the system crashed, entering the boot menu only offered "Enter Setup" whether or not the rufus created bootable USD drive was connected. Simply powering the system on entered the BIOS directly. Next, using a dual partition USB built...
Ben Myers:
Thanks for contributing to this thread! I had seen the ASUS page you referenced and explored all the topics listed to no avail. I will keep plugging along until I figure it out. I don't have an immediate need for this computer so I can take my time and enjoy the learning experience :-)
Megahertz:
When first trying to reinstall the OS, I received this error message: Windows 11 can't be installed on disk 0 partition 2 (The selected disk is of the GPT partition style). At that time, I still had access to a cmd prompt and used diskpart to convert the disk from GPT to MBR.
hsehestedt (and Megahertz):
I've created the dual file system bootable USB per Brink's tutorial method #3. The system still does not boot but I think the BIOS "sees" the USB drive for reasons described below.
1. Power on now displays the ASUS splash screen rather than entering BIOS directly
2...
heshestedt: I was able to use this installation media to boot a different computer which reinforces the idea that the current problem is with my laptop.
I don't mind experimenting with the nuts and bolts of a procedure; it's very satisfying to learn how things work. Tools like rufus are...
heshestedt: When using Option #3 in Brink's tutorial, is it possible to customize the installation to remove the requirements for Secure Boot and TPM 2.0?
megahertz: more valuable information...thank you!
I gather that American Megatrends 301 is a UEFI BIOS and that's how you knew I should...
This is encouraging information, and it addresses my earlier question.
"? Do I need to use FAT32 rather than NTFS? If so, rufus does not offer FAT32 for this .iso file (5.6GB) on this 32GB device."
I will rebuild the installation disk using Shawn's option #3 sometime tomorrow when I can...
hsehestedt: It was worth a try but using rufus 4.9 did not fix my issue.
On the premise that a picture is worth a thousand words, the boot menu shown in the attached image is what I see with a tested bootable USB drive inserted. Simply put, my computer cannot detect media storage correctly. I...
