  1. SATA vs PCIe SSD

Thanks to everyone for help! Here's the Crystal benchmark of the two drives as measured on the Windows 11 running off the SATA SSD: and here's the PCIe drive measured on Windows 10 running off it: Indeed it looks like the PCIe drive is faster. Now, why is the Windows 11 running off the...
  2. SATA vs PCIe SSD

I have two SSDs on my system - an "old-fashioned" SATA SSD and a "new" M.2 SSD that is plugged in to the PCIs x4 slot. Now, looking at the "Intel optane Memory and Storage Management" tool I find that the PCIs link speed is 4000 MB/s, while the SATA transfer rate is 6GB/s. The latter number...
  3. What would you like to see in Windows 12?

Well, I for one do not want the desktop OS to be anywhere close to phone OSs. I'm not at all sure that the phone OSs are safer - may be they are as long as the system is locked by the manufacturer, but once you "jailbreak" or "root" your phone, it becomes as secure as any other linux machine...
  4. How can I create two accounts

You can add a "Standard User" and they will be restricted in which folders they can access without entering administrator passwords. In order to restrict them from using programs, you will have to reinstall said programs "for yourself only" as opposed to "for everyone using this PC".
  5. Disk cleanup -- Ms why Hide it

But, I just did this without the old menu, it's in the Settings now ... I suppose they want to unify the interface so that there are no remnants of the old UI ... They are just rather slow at it ;)
  6. Driver updates - how to find them and is it always worth it?

As part of my exploration of Windows 11, I ran CCleaner today and the latest version has a "driver updater" tool. I know, many experts on these Forums advise against such tools and I'm not about to jump head first. however, I did wonder about driver updates for some time now and decided this is...
  7. %appdata% and %programdata%

Yes, I always do it when the system is installed.
  8. %appdata% and %programdata%

I'm not sure this really answers your questions, but I find clicking on the Navigation pane in Explorer easier then typing , so if I need to go to ProgramData, I just go there in two clicks as shown
  9. What fraction of users have migrated to Windows 11 on their main system?

Looking at the few last posts, I think it's worth remembering that any "features" that you often talk about are not really features of the OS itself, but rather those of the GUI. I've heard the argument that "the GUI is the OS" often enough and I could never agree to it. True, the GUI comes...
  10. What fraction of users have migrated to Windows 11 on their main system?

The "next big thing" is usually some consumer product (a TV, a phone, etc.) that nobody really needs at the moment, but will not be able to live without in a few years time. It's not the same with computers. Similarly, market share is an important aspect for companies competing with other...
  11. What fraction of users have migrated to Windows 11 on their main system?

Well, let's see. In my work here's what I use the most: I use Office to create presentations, I use Emacs to type texts, I use Mathematica to make simple calculations and I run my own C routines for stuff that is more involved. Other programs I use regularly are Adobe Acrobat, Araxis Merge and...
  12. What fraction of users have migrated to Windows 11 on their main system?

For me that's precisely the reason not to change the OS. I want my computer to work. Testing and tweaking are fun, but so is watching a movie. On the other hand, if you do want to watch a movie, you want your TV to work - as in to show that movie - and not to update or advertise new features...
  13. What fraction of users have migrated to Windows 11 on their main system?

I have three machines at home, all of them should be supported (all purchased within the last year) and none of them are on Win11. I only have 11 on a separate drive on my desktop for evaluation and curiosity. I see no need to switch the OS on my main work machine (same desktop, different drive)...
  14. Solved Finding the right laptop

I can only reiterate that at the moment I prefer my little LG Gram - it fits into any bag, weighs 1.3 kg, and has 17" screen. Compared to my previous 17" laptops (I never cared for smaller screens, I'd need a magnifying glass to use them) this one is about 20% smaller in size and the weight is...
  15. Let Windows take care of Windows

If you screw your system up by tweaking or something, it's always irritating, but it should not be a very big problem. The way to ensure that is to keep your data on a separate drive. This way your data is safe (relatively speaking), nothing happens to it whatever goes on with the OS. If you do...
