I had my computer built and the motherboard is in Asus z790-v.
There was a cable in the box which was Dp on both ends.
In the back of my computer the cable would only fit so that the pressure plug is facing down.
I find this dangerous because someone not aware of the necessity to press that clip might just forcefully pull it out.
Do I have an incorrect setup or is this the way it's supposed to be? The cable obviously cannot be turned upside down or it won't fit so the clip is not visible.

Some cables are better or more obvious that others. Some do not lock. Newer DisplayPort cables are backward compatible.

Maybe a DisplayPort cable with non-locking plugs?

Your PC is fine. Different manufacturers design different boards. If you’re concerned, get a cable that has no lock mechanism. I have to say, I’ve never seen a cable that uses one or a GPU or monitor that accommodates it.
Not that I’ve looked at a peripheral lately, close enough to notice. I’d only look if I had a cable with a locking catch on it I suppose.

LOL, that's funny only because I have had the exact opposite experience. I very rarely see a DP cable that does not lock.

But, back to the OP: Do you normally just have people tugging on your cables and if they do, will they exert so much force as to break it? . Probably best bet is a non-locking cable as was noted, or in lieu of that maybe a label near the connector: "CAUTION: Unplugging cable requires depressing lock mechanism" or something similar.

Hi.

The cable is cat-proof. My DP cable has a locking mechanism, too. What was worse for my DP cable was that it had a thick plastic handle around the DP port plug so I could not fit it into the graphics card due to interference with the PC case back. I had to remove some of the plastic handle. you should be glad you didn't need to do it.

Could someone please refer me to a display port cable that would accommodate my computer?
If you need more statistics about my machine, I would be glad to give them to you as I am not that techie. No one goes near there now, but at my age, I’m afraid that someone inheriting the machine which is new might tug on it. I have labeled it, but they may talk before they read if I had one that was without a latch or a key I would appreciate it.

I got a new Dell Vostro desktop in Apr. '22, it is on a KVM setup of 4 computers [Win7, Win10, Win11 and Linux Mint], has only VGA and USB connections. The Vostro has only DP/DisplayPort and HDMI while the other 3 have only VGA so I got a DP to VGA adapter, works fine. The catch on the adapter holds very well and the VGA cable will disconnect before the DP comes out of its socket.

I'm a little confused.

The DP cable is for graphics. It should connect from your graphics card to the monitor.

Are you using it for that?

You list your graphics card as a GTX 1616. As far as I know, that model number does not exist. 1660, or 1660ti, maybe?

Here is what I did:

I search Amazon for "Display port cable no lock". I'll admit that searching on Amazon is sometimes hit or miss, but the very first item listed was the one I linked to below. Nowhere in the description does it specifically say that it has no locking mechanism, but you can clearly see that this is the case from the pictures. In addition, at least one of the reviews (I didn't look at all of them) states that this cable has no locking mechanism.

So, you may need to look at a few listings and do a little detective work

EDIT: Wow, as I continue to look, there are MANY Display Port cables with no lock. I guess a lot of people hate those locks, me included . I never thought to look for a cable lacking the lock, assumed that they would all have them.

As an illustration, look at the image below. It shows one end of the cable oriented in one direction, and on the other end it shows the flip side. You can clearly see that there is no lock. Compare that to the second image where you can clearly see the lock. That might be the easiest way to determine if no lock is present.

@bobkn - I am sorry if I was misleading. The cable goes from the pc to the monitor. The monitor end has the lock on top as it should +says P8K. The end at the pc has a lock underneath but only goes one way=on the bottom.
The graphics = Zotac, Nvidia, GeForce, GTX,1660 Super Dual Fan 6GB, GDDR6 - the pc is Asus Z790-v prime Wi-Fi, intel, LGA, 1700 , ATX
I appreciate the correct referral with no lock so I don't make an error.

Looking back over your first post, I find that I misunderstood it. My apologies. You're concerned that someone might damage the plug or the PC by yanking out the DP cable without releasing the lock.

That's a legitimate concern.

I'd prefer to have the lock. Maybe I'd just put a tag on the cable asking that the lock button be used to remove the cable. (That's not foolproof, though.)

As already posted, you can probably obtain a DP cable with no lock. Or, if the monitor allows, you could switch to an HDMI cable. Those don't lock.

It’s funny because I already have a tag on the computer end of the cable and it explains that you have to press underneath to unlock it. Maybe I’ll keep it like it is although I did write to Micro Center asking if they did have a cable with the statistics I’ve given that has no lock on it
