24H2 blocked, still installs?!?!?!?!?! GPO not working.

In Windows 11 23H2, I used gpedit.msc to set up a block in Windows 11 to not install 24H2. Windows Update again is installing 24H2. I just restored my system back to 23H2 to get work accomplished, and now 24H2 automatically installs again. What else can I do? Why is the GPO not working? I am so damn tired of 24H2 installing, that I cannot always battle the restore process back to 23H2. Very time consuming.

When I turn mine off it is not greyed out and still showing on. You might want to reset your Windows Update. There is a Tutorial about how to do it.

When I used gpedit to block 24H2, that is when the Windows Update option got grayed out.

When 24H2 download started and installing, that is when the option changed not showing grayed out and off.

I am so tired of restoring my systems back to 23H2, Linux and macOS really do seem like a great option. Too many things are broken in 24H2 that I cannot find a way to get them to work in 24H2 because the OS is broken.

I don't use gpedit for this. I have found that with 'Get the latest updates....' turned on in Windows Update then if you click 'Check for updates' it will start downloading and installing 24H2. With it turned off then it's safe to check for updates. You'll see 24H2 offered, but it will only install if you click 'Download & install'.

I did not see the "Download & install" button. When I checked Windows Update, that is when I noticed 24H2 was installing, which is installed now.

I'm looking for a method that will stop 24H2 from installing. Apparently the gpedit or the registry mod does not work that is found on here and many other places on the Internet.

Microsoft's forcefulness of pushing 24H2 on Windows 11 is getting very old and tiresome. I have wasted so much time just backing up and restoring my systems, including files restores to file changes after the system images were made, that it is nearly becoming useless.

Currently I do many of my normal tasks in Linux that I would normally do in Windows, but various business and client related support that I do is in Windows.

I think that the problem is that the 'get the latest updates....' switch is taking priority when it is turned on. As I said, I have no trouble staying on 23H2 without invoking gpedit. All I have to do is keep that switch turned off and avoid clicking the optional 24H2 'download & install' button.

The Get the latest updates as soon as they're available option has been disabled/turned off. I had this way originally when 24H2 installed.

Then I used the gpedit or the registry mod to prevent 24H2 from installing again, and 24H2 installed through Windows Update.

I have restored my systems back to 23H2 several times just to get them to run right again from the 24H2 upgrade.

I keep trying all the registry edits, etc. that I am finding on these forums and 24H2 still installs.

I used to think 24H2 would not install until it did. If 24H2 would allow the printers, scanners, and the network sharing of folders and devices work (like it always has for decades its been around), and supposedly these Microsoft so-called "blocks" are not supposed to install 24H2, I and many other users are greatly losing trust in Microsoft.

For me to restore all my systems back to 23H2, including incremental file restores, then making sure all devices and network shares still works again, this takes me nearly 3 days of work. Unfortunately I do not have this time any longer in my life to continuously repeat this process. This is why I have been using Linux for more of these normal tasks in Windows lately. This is not about Linux vs Windows, I just know Linux well (using it from 1994 to now).

I have a Windows 10 Pro x64 VirtualBox guest OS that I have been using for some time still. After all of these Windows 11 24H2 problems, rather than re-installing Windows 11 23H2 just for it to automatically upgrade to Windows 11 24H2, I may go back to the ever popular Windows 10 22H2. I read on another forum that many users are using Windows 10 22H2 again rather than the horrid Windows 11. May be a good solution until Microsoft's gets their act together (if ever).

@Bree . I was offered 24H2 on our 4 pcs a few days ago - 23H2 Home. The " Get Updates As Soon....." toggle is and always has been off. I will pause Windows Update until after Patch Tuesday to see how things are and then Resume. Can I take it that only the 23H2 Cumulative Updates would be installed and that I would need to select "Download & Install " the 24H2 button specifically for that to happen? I want to stay on 23H2 for a few more months and don't want 24H2 to be downloaded with the 23H2 Updates next week. Thanks Mitch.

Is this the tutorial you used? Just to verify, you did set your target version at 23H2...correct? NOT 24H2

I have a noob question: I am currently on 23H2 and have no immediate desire to update to 24H2 until MS sorts out (or if MS sorts out) most of the "issues" in 24H2. However, I have a MS induced block, stopping the offer and update to 24H2. If I were to remove the block from redit, would the update be offered? Or conversely, If someone had no block and manually added said block, would that remove the offer to update?

Curious minds would like to know.

Very interesting, so you have that same block, that in my case is linked to "winusb device" which is labelled as "Aura LED Controller" in Device Manager, and yet MS will still push the update. I think I will shut my mouth and fade back into the shadows and maybe MS will forget to push the update to me until late next year...

Gibson | InControl is designed to prevent the 24H2 update from installing. I have it and it appears to be working. It is a free utility and can be downloaded at the site listed below.

This is why I do not believe Microsoft's "blocks" work because 24H2 still installs. Plus I use a Western Digital drive in all of my systems that supposedly Microsoft has a block and it is ignored still.

I may look in to this next. Over night all my computers upgraded from Windows 11 23H2 to 24H2. I am going to roll these back again. Hopefully these will easily roll back the update. Otherwise I will have to go through the image restores on all these computers.

Microsoft can easily say they are blocking certain conditions. When I do not see them occurring, not just on my computers, but all the computers that I see every day at my clients, I know Microsoft's blocks are just false assurances and deceiving end-users trust.
