⚠️ Update:​

RUFUS has been updated to version 4.6.​

The fix below should no longer be needed​

  • Create the USB using Rufus​

  • In File Explorer, open the USB and run Setup.exe​

Work around for In-Place Upgrade to help RUFUS created USB install.​

  • For unsupported hardware

This worked for me:​
  • Open Command Prompt as admin
    • Search (Win + S) for CMD, right click on Command Prompt and open as admin.

  • Copy & paste each line below, one at a time into command window & press enter after each command is entered. (or run the attached compiled reg file or batch file)

  • After completed, whilst in Windows, run setup.exe from your RUFUS created 24H2 install USB

  • (As mentioned) Click on each line below to copy to clipboard and paste into the command window. (5 commands)
  • Press enter after pasting each command.

reg.exe delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\CompatMarkers" /f 2>NUL

reg.exe delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Shared" /f 2>NUL

reg.exe delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\TargetVersionUpgradeExperienceIndicators" /f 2>NUL

  • Now run setup.exe from the Rufus created USB

These will be added to the next version of RUFUS

You can read the content of the batch file by right clicking on the batch file and choosing edit.

I think the cumulative update is the offender. So far, as I haven't installed it, 24H2 is going OK

Tried the Rufus 4.5 upgrade even running the scripts above and I get message "searching for hard drives" then a bunch of drives show up and when I select the partition to install it does accept it. Same problem when I tried "upgrade server install" option. This is on a Lenovo Z7 laptop.

BUT once again they got it wrong. Why are Tech magazines so lazy?

A. They got Pete’s name wrong. It isn’t Pete Bard it’s Pete Bartard
B. Pete didn’t come up with the registry workarounds, Pete accredited that to “Win 11 Boot And Upgrade FiX KiT”
