I just got my new laptop and have installed Macrium Reflect Free v8. I followed the tutorial to access an individual file, e.g., Thunderbird and Firefox Bookmarks, but I do not get the "Explore Image" as shown in the first attached screenshot when I right click on the backup file. Instead, I get what is shown in the second screenshot that does not have this option listed. Do I need the paid version to get these files? I cannot get to files like Thunderbird or Firefox with "Browse Image." If there is a way, I am open to suggestions.

Welcome to Eleven Forum. :)

You need to right click on the image itself... in File Explorer... not in Macrium Reflect.

@TexasBandit

You can select it from Reflect

1649281830127.png

Then select partition (I always tick enable access to restricted folders)

1649281947926.png

It then gets assigned a drive letter and you can explore this "virtual drive" like any other drive from file explorer.

To remove it when finished, right click on drive in File Explorer, and select to unmount image.

I do not see it is really that much easier, and if you have Macrium Image Guardian on, I am not sure you can do it directly from File Explorer. I would have to test it.

I tried a right click on the file in Windows Explorer as you suggested, but I don't see the "explore image." This is a screen shot of my attempt. Do you have the paid version or the free version. Perhaps this option isn't available in the free version that I have.

Thanks

It looks like you are right clicking on a foder instead of an reflect backup image file. Also, though I believe the right click -> "Explore Image" is on the the main right click menu, you might need to click on "Show more options". But I doubt it, I think you have not selected an image file.

Not a matter of paid vs free.

Well... this will give you the full context menu...

I believe that both free and paid will let you explore the image.
As mentioned, you have to right click on the image itself... not the folder.
The actual "image" will have a blue icon...

No, it works the same in Free. In fact, as Explore is the default action for a .mrimg file the easiest way to mount one is to double-click on it. Remember to tick the box for 'Enable access to restricted folders' as that will bypass any permissions restrictions while looking for your files.

My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 4GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus the Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds as a native boot .vhdx.
I tried a "File and Folder" backup, but still no joy.

So I have another question. The files I need are on a Macrium backup from Windows 10 Pro on another laptop. It crashed and will not boot. If I restore the Windows 10 Pro backup from that laptop to my current one, (now on 11Pro) can I restore back to the Windows 11 Pro image when I have obtained the files I need? It's a new laptop, and I sure do not want to mess it up!

Thanks for all your help

You just have to double-click on the Macrium backup .mrimg file. Reflect will then offer to mount it a a virtual drive so that you can explore it with File Explorer. It's really that simple. Remember to tick the box for 'Enable access to restricted folders' to bypass any ntfs file permissions.

Thanks for the response Bree. I tried your suggestion, but I still can't get it to work! I did check the box "Enable Access to Restricted Folders" each time. I must be dumb as a post!

You did also put a tick in the box for the partition you want to see? (the C: partition in my screenshot above).

When you click the OK button in the Backup Selection window after doing that, Macrium mounts the drive with a new drive letter (in my case E:, in the screenshot above). Open your File Explorer at This PC, you should see the newly mounted drive letter there.

Yes, I got that far. But I can't bring the data up in File Explorer format because I don't get the Explore Image option in the drop down. When I right click on the image, I only get Browse Image and get what is shown in the screenshot below. I must be missing something! I get what is shown in the screenshot attached. I know it is easy, but this old guy just can't seem to get it right! LOL Screenshot (5).pngScreenshot (6).pngScreenshot (7).png

Another strategy Bree ... I currently have Windows 11 Pro on my new laptop. Can I use Macrium to restore a Windows 10 Pro image. I can get the files I need from that image. Then can I use Macrium to restore back my Windows 11 Pro image? I don't want to mess up this new one!

You are, you have in fact succeeded without realising it. The images are successfully mounted and you can now browse them with File Explorer and copy any files from them that you need.

Your last screenshot clearly shows three mounted Macrium images, they are your drives E:, F: and G:. Here is a snip from your screenshot:

The blue drive icon to the left of each with a little 'Reflect' symbol in the middle indicates a drive that has been mounted from a Macrium image.

On your PC, the folder that appear in File Explorer just named as 'Documents' is not the true physical path and names of the folder. It is actually stored in C:\Users\yourname\Documents (for yourname, substitute your own user folder's name). Windows shows it as just 'Documents' to make it easier for you to find use it.

When you are exploring a Macrium image of your C: drive (your 'G: Windows' for example) you'll find all your documents in G:\Users\yourname\Documents.

Thanks Bree & thanks for your patience with this old guy.

I have another question ... my laptop is running Windows 11 Pro. If I restore an image that was running Windows 10 Pro, when I finish with it, can I restore back to my Windows 11 Pro image without issues? I guess I am wondering if Macrium would get upset going across Windows versions.

Thanks Again!
