Apps Add or Remove Open with "Browse apps in the Microsoft Store" in Windows 11

  • Staff
Microsoft_Store_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove Look for an app in the Microsoft Store (old) or Browse apps in the Microsoft Store (new) in the Open with dialog for all users in Windows 11 and Windows 10.

The Open with context menu allows you to choose an app to open a file with by default.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22567, Microsoft has updated the “Open with” dialog box to align with Windows 11 design principles. The updated dialog box honors light/dark theme. We have also simplified the experience by making it possible to update your default app with just one click.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22579, is reverting the Open With dialog box redesign. Microsoft plans to bring this back in the future after addressing some performance issues identified by Windows Insiders.

Starting with Windows 11 build 25206, the updated “Open with” dialog box is now available to all.

When you open the Open with context menu and click/tap on Choose another app, you can select Look for an app in the Microsoft Store (old) or Browse apps in the Microsoft Store (new) in the Open with dialog to have the Microsoft Store app open to select and install an app you want to open the file type with.

If you prefer to not have Look for an app in the Microsoft Store (old) or Browse apps in the Microsoft Store (new) in the Open with dialog, you can remove it.

You must be signed in as an administrator to add or remove Look for an app in the Microsoft Store in the Open with dialog.

This policy will not affect Search the Microsoft Store in the Open with context menu.

This didn't work for me neither using the reg tweak nor the Group Policy Editor both on Windows 10 and 11. When I right click on a file then choose Open With, I still see the Look for an app for a store option.

Did someone actually test this tweak?

Hello, :)

Yes, it was tested on my system on Dev build 22579 and public build 22000.556 to verify. Otherwise I wouldn't post it as a tutorial.

What Windows 11 build are you running? I'll check to see if there may be a difference.

Just to note:

This policy will not affect Search the Microsoft Store in the Open with context menu.

I also asked my buddy the owner of MajorGeeks.com about this as he just posted the same tweak and he confirmed it works for him. Seems like it is some tweak that I am doing that is interfering with this. I do use Winaero Tweaker for most of the tweaks except the ones I know he messed up and doesn't work (ie. his hide windows media player context menu doesn't work nor his show battery time remaining tweak doesn't work. Next time I format I won't touch Winaero Tweaker and do all the tweaks manually.

hmm, I just noticed something, if I remove the extension of a file to make it unknown then right click on it and choose open with, now I don't see the Windows store option but it does show me the windows store option for known file types. Is that how it should be or do you see no look for an app with the Windows store even for known file types such as videos, pics, etc?

This is normal for unassociated file types to not have anything but "Open with".
