Alternative for Google Drive for Desktop? 🤔

Is there a good alternative for Google Drive for Desktop with the same functionality (synching to your google account's gdrive online, integration with Windows Explorer context menus, sharing links to "Anyone with the link", ... but also displays transfer speeds and has better UI?

I'm just fed up with how bad Google Drive for Desktop works. Most of the time it just doesn't synch some files and you have no idea why, it has very few configuration and customization options, it doesn't show the transfer speeds (I guess on purpose, so you don't realize how slow it really is due to Google throttling the transfers), the context menu entries just disappear god knows why... 🤦🏻

The old Google Backup & Synch was great, but Google Drive for Desktop is plain crapware. It has been a painful and infuriating experience dealing with this crap.

To clarify: I'm not looking to use alternative storage providers like Onedrive, Dropbox, etc. I just want a better Windows software for my google account storage.

I am using Insync on Linux and Windows.

It supports Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox.

I am using it for Onedrive, and I have used it with Google Drive previously. It works well.

If you use OneDrive, you have to understand how it works. The problem is many don't.
@TraderGary Exactly! That's been my point all along in my long-winded posts about it. And you do understand. That's why it works out so well for you.

Knowledgeable users know whether Onedrive is for them or not. But the number of those not in the know far exceeds those who are. They are not geeks like us here. It's many of those people who end up here all because they were not given a clear choice in the first place. IMO, the way MS has chosen to go about this is nothing but a deceptive marketing tactic to sell 365. Is 365 a good deal? Absolutely...for the person who wants to use it, understands it, and it fits their needs... like you. But that's far from everyone.

There is absolutely NO SUBJECT that has been cussed and discussed on the is forum more than Onedrive.... it's usefullness, it's idiosyncrancies, AND the problems it has caused users because they either don't understand it, don't want to use it, or don't know they're using it. I cringe every single time we see a new thread from a user with his file system in a mess. It has been talked about backward, forward, and sideways. It has been the savior for some for using it and misery for others because they were using it unbeknownst to themselves.

MS has caused the chaos we have seen surrounding Onedrive by forcing it on users, thereby MS is the reason for most people's hatred of it. Onedrive should be an option....a choice...period...just as any other cloud storage is. A clear and concise explanation during OOBE for both PRO and HOME users should be given that if one uses a MS account, he's using Onedrive, his files will NOT be stored on his local drive, he's given only 5 gb of storage, and if his data exceeds that amount he has to buy more storage or pay $100 a year for 365. How hard would that be for MS to do to put it in simple language... a clear and concise opt-out of Onedrive and using a local account instead during OOBE. Would this solve ALL the problems? No. Some users would click, click, click, right on through OOBE and set up a MS account anyway. But it would help to solve a lot of them. To my way of thinking a fairer marketing practice would be a local account being the first option during OOBE with an explanation of the advantages of setting up a MS account instead. It would do a hell-of-a lot more to promote 365 and all it's advantages.

Many folks out there are sitting in the dark, fat and happy, with less than 5gb of data syncing to Onedrive and they don't even know it. Their system crashes so they'll recover or clean install and like magic, their files are still there. This is a perfect solution. Onedrive saves the day.

But more often than not, an existing user will transfer a bunch of photos from his phone to his PC because he doesn't want to buy more icloud storage. Or there will be a little old lady who buys a new computer and she sets up a MS account because MS tells her she has to in big bold letters. She then transfers 20 gb of photos and videos dating back 20 years to it or goes on Facebook and saves every photo all 10 of her grandkids post onto her system. She saves every email not knowing that's tied to her amount of allowed Onedrive storage, too. So, soon she has more than 5 gb of stuff in OD.

Boom. Both these users are caught in the Onedrive trap. They don't know how to get out of it, so they delete onedrive thinking that will cut off the head of the snake or have someone else who doesn't understand it either do it for them. All this does is compound the mess.

Should either of these users have taken responsibility to learn about their situation in the first place and know the proper way to get out of it? In a perfect world, yes. But the normal everyday consumer of Windows(or Apple or Android) is not in the know. They know only when something works and when it doesn't. Knowing the why is over the head of many users. They don't even know the proper questions to ask. With Onedrive, I deal with them all time and don't even try to explain it any more because it just does not sink in for a lot of people. I do my best to get their files back on their system drive where they want them to be. Most times I can. But sometimes, files have been lost depending on what has happened before I get it and how much time has passed. Files are removed on MS servers for whatever reason. Once a customer's incorrect actions gets involved and what happened on Onedrive servers, it is not 100% infallible.

Using my old lady example, buying 365 might not be right for her. She's on a tight fixed income.$99 a year is a lot of money to her. She has no need for all the bells and whistles of 365 or doesn't trust something she doesn't understand. I can't in good conscience tell her the best choice is to spend $99 a year to subscribe to 365. MS has no right to put her into the situation where she has to either as a easy way to resolve her problem
along with quick money in their pocket.

I usually can support most of MS decisions but forcing Onedrive syncing on unsuspecting users is the single biggest dis-service MS has ever put in place. MS has absolutely NO RIGHT to decide where a user's files are stored. I'll use John's server space to say it over and over as many times as I have to, hoping just ONE reader will read it before they are affected by it, and if they are affected by it to know that there is a proper way to get out of it. All they need to do it ask before they make their situation worse.

I fully understand why 365 works out so well for you and others here, Gary, and why you believe in it so much. I'm in no way arguing against anyone buying 365. It's a fantastic product for certain users' needs. I'm just saying it's not right for everyone and you, me, or MS should not assume 365 is always the solution for everyone. There is no one size fits all.
My opinion and I'm stickin' to it. Yeah. Sue me. I'm in a mood and on one of my rolls today. Aren't you glad I picked your reply to respond to?

Thanks to all for your answers. Much to study and test here.

To give an example: I have a pretty good symmetric connection:
1728398099908.png

Just yesterday, I downloaded a 30GB file in 10 minutes using JDownloader and then uploaded it to one of my Google Drive shared folders. My Google account currently has 112GB used out of a total 200GB.

'Google Drive for Desktop' started to upload it, of course never told me the transfer speed, and with the machine doing nothing else (it's a secondary PC and I was sleeping) it took TWELVE HOURS and it repeated the process like 4 or 5 times, without displaying any error or any info at all... 🤦🏻

And no, it's not my connection or my ISP or whatever, because I don't have any problem at all uploading files to MEGA or other hosting providers. It's just Google Drive being pure CRAP, not telling the user what it's doing, what the transfer speed is, why it repeated the transfer once it was supposedly finished, what errors it supposedly found, etc... it's just drop & pray.

On top of that, it doesn't even properly account for high DPI settings and *always* starts up like this crap:
1728398638186.png
where you can't even access the menus and controls unless you know you have to zoom out using Ctrl+mouse wheel... (had to look it up on reddit). And it doesn't save the zoom setting, so you have to repeat that *every single time* Google Drive is loaded. FFS... 🤦🏻

So yeah, this is definitely the straw that broke the camel's back. FVCK Google and FVCK their pile of crapware.

I'm not really sure I would call it deceptive. Getting 6TB of cloud storage space for $99 a year by itself is cheaper than you find anywhere. On top of that, you get Office on any and all devices. I'd almost call it ingenious...because I probably wouldn't pay $99 a year for Office, but give me all that cloud space that I do use and understand..and you have a customer for a long time.
There is absolutely NO SUBJECT that has been cussed and discussed on the is forum more than Onedrive.... it's usefullness, it's idiosyncrancies, AND the problems it has caused users because they either don't understand it, don't want to use it, or don't know they're using it. It has been the savior for some for using it and misery for others because they were using it unbeknownst to themselves.
I think a lot comes down to those who "don't trust the cloud". Also I guess for somebody like me, i've never really just saved files into my user profile. I've always previously saved it to a network file server in my house. I've always done a "save as", and navigated to a location that is organized to store my files. Therefore, I feel that OneDrive isn't confusing at all. I put some stuff in it, and I keep other stuff on shared drives in my house on my network.

MS has caused the chaos we have seen surrounding Onedrive by forcing it on users, thereby MS is the reason for most people's hatred of it. Onedrive should be an option....a choice...period...just as any other cloud storage is. This is what I don't understand. I previously would partition my HDD as a C drive (for the OS) and a D drive (for games and data). I would created D:\data. And then I would create D:\data\Office\Word and store all of my word documents there, and C:\data\Office\Excel and all of my spreadsheets would go there. I've never felt forced to put my data files in any one particular place, I've always had a choice

Gary, can I be a bother please?

If I have 5 computers that all use the same Microsoft account, but the computers are named differently

Example
Desktop - Sinto 1
Desktop - Sinto 2
Etc

Can I share that Microsoft 365 and get 1TB for each PC, regardless that they share the same account?

Will M365 identify them as different computers an allow the family sub for those 5 PC’s using the same MS account?

I ask you because I am assuming you use more that one PC/laptop?

I have a second PC that is always up to date and ready to take over if my primary PC were to fail. I also have an iPad Pro, an iPad Mini, and a Pixel 7 Pro smart phone. All 5 devices log into my Microsoft account and share my Microsoft 365 subscription. All of these devices share the same 1TB of cloud OneDrive, the same OneNote app and all have full access to download and run all Microsoft Office apps.

The beauty of all devices sharing the same 1TB of OneDrive is that they are all fully up to date on all my data and photos in real-time. I love being at a store and needing some information from my computer and I have everything I need right on my smart phone!

I have the family plan Microsoft 365 subscription. My wife has full access to all Office apps and has her own 1TB of OneDrive totally separate from mine. I don't have access to her 1TB of OneDrive and she doesn't have access to my 1TB of OneDrive. They are totally separate. All I do is list her in my Microsoft 365 account as a 365 member and she gets full benefits, just like mine.

No, each MS account gets 1TB of space. If you have 5 PC's all using the same MS account they all share the same 1TB account.

You would need to have a different MS account on each of the other PC's, if you wanted them each to have their own unique 1TB of space. You simply add those other accounts to your family plan.

Hi folks

Not getting into the rights and wrongs of Ms's tactics but I believe the OP wanted another piece of software to upload / retrieve data from any type of cloud provider.

Why not just use something like filezilla (on both Windows and Linux) to upload / retrieve your files to wherever -- cloud storage or otherwise. So long as you can get the url of where your data is stored then no problem -- and filezilla is fast, decently secure (sftp protocol) and FREE. !! Standard ftp protocol also supported.

really simple GUI interface as well. The only "disadvantage" (IMHO it's not a disadvantage) is that you have to do the data xfer manually. - I always prefer this option rather than "automatic sync" type of things which is probably the biggest cause of getting data to "go missing" than anything else. At least with a manual xfer it's under YOUR control all the time.

where you can't even access the menus and controls unless you know you have to zoom out using Ctrl+mouse wheel... (had to look it up on reddit). And it doesn't save the zoom setting, so you have to repeat that *every single time* Google Drive is loaded. FFS... 🤦🏻
Thanks for that tip about zooming out. I just learned something new today.

Have no probs with OneDrive -- works on Linux too - it's cheap enough for the amount of storage I need -- approx €18 / $19.50 (US) a year -- for 500GB -- that's fine for me.

I wouldn’t agree that OneDrive is the cheapest option—there are more affordable cloud storage services, like TeraBox with 1TB free or Degoo offering 100GB free.

However, since that’s not what you’re looking for and you want better Windows software for your Google account storage, here are some options:
  • Rclone or Air Explorer: These tools let you sync and manage files on Google Drive with more control and features compared to Google Drive for Desktop.
  • Cyberduck or Mountain Duck: These apps integrate with Google Drive and allow you to mount your drive as a local disk, making file management through Windows much easier.
These tools might give you a better experience while sticking with Google Drive.

My google drive works fine as well. But I only have it syncing certain folders, and it's a proper backup instead of onedrives mirroring. What settings are you using? Is it backing up all the files on your pc or just certain folders?

You could also just every now and then go to google drive website and backup files and folders manually. That way you can eliminate the software altogether. I would never trust a third party program to upload my files to a cloud provider. I am sure there are some out there though.

Here are some:

That's fair if you need office and want cloud storage from microsoft. But onedrive definitely can have a mind of its own and some people like me dont like the way it works and how it touches your files. It also can be incredibly annoying with its syncing and can massively slow down file explorer. I use it at work and it's quite a headache sometimes.
Not true - people just do not take time to learn how to use it properly particular files on demand.

You cannot compare home use with office use as many offices have complete user accounts attached to onedrive and do not use files on demand.

What's not true? I understand it can be set up different at work and at home. I tried it in both places. Either way, for me personally it sucks and I hate it and I hate how it operates.

I outlined in post 13 why I dislike it. Creating its own folder to dump stuff into is stupid. I don't like the way it operates. I can't exclude folders inside my documents folder from being uploaded unless I manually move them to the old direct documents folder before it moved everything. Meaning then some documents stuff has to be stored in a different documents folders which is stupid.

Google drive doesn't move my files, if I make changes to a file it uploads it and its backed up quickly. I can set it up so that If I delete that file it doesn't get deleted on google drive. I can choose as many or as little files as I want to be backed up or not.

Also never had a problem syncing with google drive.

Degoo reduced free storage from 100GB to 20GB. That happened over a year ago now.

Terabox has some limitations
  • Max # of files on free account is 500
  • max file size on free account is 4GB
  • uploads and download speeds are limited on free accounts.
  • i think the client is bundled with ads
  • who knows about their security or how long they will be around. Think they have changed companies about 3 times now.

i don't "love" the backups feature of Windows and integration with Onedrive. I put my OneDrive folder on my D:\ drive, and I save directly to specific folders in onedrive for stuff that I want out there.

It's not for everybody though, like @andrew129260 . He doesn't like the fact that it's not a backup. I personally don't want my OneDrive cloud to operate like a backup...i want it to be a sync of the stuff on my machine. If I have deleted a file because I no longer want it on my PC, i want it removed from the cloud as well. For me, OneDrive is a second location of an active file. So, if my PC is lost, or stolen, or I try to access from another computer, it's going to be on onedrive. But if I delete the original from the source computer, I also want it now removed from the secondary location as well.

For some things I don't want synced, I use the web client and I just cut and paste my files into a separate folder in OneDrive and leave them there as my long term storage of the file without syncing.
