Windows 11
Hi

I used to be happy with Aomei Backupper until it began to hangup my Win 11 system twice. So I tried Macrium but it missing important feature to backup certain files and folders not the complete partition. I heard about Veem, is it used to single Windows usage ?like

  • backup system partitions
  • backup certain files incremental
  • explore backup image files

why it is very big 9.5GB download ?

What are your recommendations ?

Thanks

Macrium Reflect.

It looks like Veeam is only a trial. So you might as well pay for Macrium.
The paid version will do files and folders.

All I can say is that in 20+ years, this is the first I've heard of Veeam. It may be great.... who knows.
I have the feeling, it's gonna be seriously bloated, or stripped of worthwhile features.

As for Macrium... yeah, it's not cheap, but you can find it on sale and it is a "lifetime" license you would be buying.

Personally i have tried them all and two of them , Macrium and Aomei both failed me when i needed to reinstall from a backup image. So I now use EaseUs Backup Pro and I have Not had one issue and it works perfect with Win11

I haven't tried it, here is the edition comparison. It is not clear what the average punter is supposed to about a recovery environment with the free version. Maybe pebuilders like myself could do a diy, but its a bit much to expect granny to do it.

I have only had a quick look at evorim, looks good so far. Glad to see it using wimlib so very quick. I havent tested exclusions yet.

Yep +1 for WimLib.

I recall trying to convert the C source to C# a couple years ago but C being procedural has gazillions of lines of code .. so I just gave up.. however I see it has been ported to CLR now

Sorry for being OT.

I'm beginning to think that some of these backup things are getting a bit "Last Century" rather like older Anti Virus type of programs.

Backups should always be taken - but if you switch to using entirely vhdx files for your windows installations (whether in a VM or as a real machine) just saving the vhdx files doesn't need any special backup software whatsoever -- and even mounting an image which was good in MACRIUM can be done by simply diskpart-> select vdisk->attach vdisk->list vol ->assign letter=xx. Just save with file explorer !!! and xmit to a NAS for extra backup.

I have 100% nothing against Macrium or whatever -- great company - but as times and methodology changes then why stick to the ways that it was done 20 years ago,

Still though whatever you use ==>PLEASE always have sufficient backup -- and test it from time to time.

Cheers
