AMI BIOS - How to Permanently Set the Boot Order for Devices?

AMI BIOS Version: 1663

I have been trying for several hours now to make settings in the BIOS that permanently set the boot order for my system as follows:

1 - Flash Drive
2 - DVD Drive
3 - System Drive (this is my normal boot drive)
4 - Network

In the BIOS I arrange the boot order as shown but when I try to "Save changes & reset" the BIOS tells me "You have not made any changes to the BIOS settings". I have tried so many times to do this that I am now close to the point of giving in in despair. Can someone please give me a step by step guide by which I can get this BIOS to recognise and permanently save the above boot order for devices?

About 3-4 or 6 years ago, BIOSes the world over started setting the "Windows Boot Manager" as the default boot device.

The solution is NOT to fight with the BIOS, but to leave it as is and use the "Boot Menu" to do a one-time choice for which device to boot from...

For ASUS motherboards, just hit the F8 key at early boot, to bring up the Boot Menu.
For example, my Boot Menu, looks like this (ASUS motherboard)...

Here, I can quickly choose which device I want to boot from... one-time.
The Boot Menu doesn't remember your selection at next boot. But, it's so easy... I think it's a better solution.

Thank you for the response. I take that as a partial solution for me and am left wondering why in the BIOS AMI have made it possible to set the boot order but not save the settings. Weird.

It is reasonable 'solution' but I think not a better one. I would say it's far more convenient just to put a flash drive in the USB port then boot the machine. No pressing of keys required.

The BIOS version I have is AMI BIOS Version: 1663. Available update offered at Asus website for this BIOS on my motherboard is Version 1805 (2024/11/11).

I am on a newly purchased desktop PC and I'm not going to flash the BIOS unless there is something drastically wrong with the system. That's all technical territory of which I know next to nothing about so caution is my guide.

It may be best to upgrade BIOS version because of recent problems with 13th and 14th generation which includes i7 and i19 processors, over voltage and power which can deteriorate CPUs.

Thank you so much for that heads up. I checked out the video you posted and updated the BIOS now.

Actually I downloaded the Asus AI Suite 3.03.36 thinking that it would allow me to setup the BIOS update from within Windows. Turned out that for my motherboard that wasn't offered as an option. Had to set up a flash drive with BIOS update on it and manage the thing from within the BIOS itself. Never done that before so that was at times a heart stopping sequence of events thinking that I might trash my new PC. In the end, though, it worked out fine, my guesswork navigating the BIOS to do this was spot on!

Once back in the system and seeing that everything seemed fine I uninstalled Asus AI Suite as for me it just seems like bloatware.

That's the spirit. Upgrading/flashing BIOS became very easy and safe, all you have to do is follow instructions to a T and it's done best going thru BIOS than thru SW and windows. Gone are the days when it was dangerous adventure. Some even have a button to flash BIOS even without CPU and RAM installed. Might also want to update chipset drivers and of course 24H2 because those also have features to keep CPU safe and working better.

Have now installed several driver updates including the chipset ones and system is behaving better than before, too much detail to go into. However, I don't think I'll be attempting to install 24H2, even if I could workout how to do so. My motherboard is "ASUS Prime B760M-A WiFi D4" and there is an advisory note from Microsoft that 24H2 might fail to install on some Asus motherboards Some ASUS devices might fail to install Windows 11, version 24H2 On that basis discretion is the better part of valour so I'll be skipping that for quite some time.

But those are just 2 laptops that you don't have and that doesn't affect you.

Many do not realise you can create a graphics boot menu even if only one OS by setting boot timer in advanced system settings.

Of course, if you dual boot you get the graphics boot menus by default.

Then (for uefi - not sure about legacy bios as I never use it anymore) you get the option option to select other ways of booting e.g. from usb drive.

I gave up trying to make bios boot orders permanent as across different pcs, each bios was different.

So I just stick to the UEFI Windows boot manager as @Ghot says.

Of course, if you dual boot you get the graphics boot menus by default.

Then (for uefi - not sure about legacy bios as I never use it anymore) you get the option option to select other ways of booting e.g. from usb drive.

I gave up trying to make bios boot orders permanent as across different pcs, each bios was different.

So I just stick to the UEFI Windows boot manager as @Ghot says.

Or even more practical, just ad Safe BOOT option.
