Apache Open Office

Just got notification that a new Version has been released, 4.1.12.

It seems a bit odd that there is not a 64 bit version for Windows

True. But then there's no x86/32-bit version of Win11 but no problem running 32-bit programs, oldest I have is Lotus SmartSuite 9.8 on it. Lotus SmartSuite 9.7 will also run [but not the even older Lotus SmartSuite 97]. As you can tell I don't through out old software CDs, maybe should one day.

Well, it is free, and would cost a lot of money to develop new version.
I am always a bit wary of these sorts of packages - I find it strange people will pay a lot for hardware but refuse to pay for (quality) software.

However, if free versions suit your needs, fine.

Odd, as there is a 64bit version of Libre Office, which is just a fork of OO

Note also that some people have recommended LibreOffice as being a better choice than OpenOffice.

There's also IMO a far better and more compatible version of Office (If you can do without the VBasic in EXCEL you can even replicate complex EXCEL spreadsheets in it too) is WPS office (I believe used to be Kingsoft). Handles all Ms Office formats.

This one is rarely mentioned but it beats the other 2 frequently mentioned Free Office alternates by a "Galaxy". I suspect the other two are mentioned because they are often installed by default on a lot of Linux distros.

I have put LibreOffice on a number of clients' computers simply because they had Microsoft Works on their old ones and had files created in Works, LibreOffice can still open those files and so far is only program that can. In that light Win10 can run Microsoft Works 9.x, haven't yet tried Works 8.5 nor Works 9 on Win11. Only issue with Works I've seen is a warning about having more that 500 Fonts installed but still works.
