Hey everyone,
I'm facing a strange issue on my personal Windows 11 laptop:
Whenever I press Win + R and type %AppData% or %LocalAppData%, instead of opening the corresponding folder, I get a “How do you want to open this file?” dialog.
Additional notes:
Has anyone faced this before or knows how to fully reset folder/file associations in Windows, especially for environment variable paths?
Thanks in advance
I'm facing a strange issue on my personal Windows 11 laptop:

- It happens only with folder-based environment variables like %AppData%, %LocalAppData%
- Typing C:\ or manually browsing folders in File Explorer works fine
- I tried:
- sfc /scannow
- Folder registry fix (.reg files)
- Resetting .lnk associations
- PowerShell registry fixes for folder shell open
Has anyone faced this before or knows how to fully reset folder/file associations in Windows, especially for environment variable paths?
Thanks in advance
