I think that with the ridiculous hardware requirements that MS has put upon us that most of us are VM. So I thought it would be interesting to know who is Hardware and who is VM? Just say "VM" Or "Hardware" Simple! Although VM is much easier then hardware. Let's see where this post goes, if anywhere. I'll start.

VM

Three Hardware:

Laptop
Home Desktop (Dual Boot)
Teaching Desktop at Sr. Center (Dual Boot)

I may try to install 11 on Little Lenovo (14"), depending on whether I can find the time to figure it out.

Combination:
1 VM in Dev Channel
1 VM waiting for the first BETA release
1 Laptop that technically is not supported because it has a 7th gen i7

Only problem so far on the laptop is that I cannot change the desktop background on individual virtual desktops as I can within a VM.

1 x hardware (does not have TMP nor is the CPU on the supported list)
2 x VM (Both in Hyper-V on Windows 10 host. 1 AMD and 1 Intel system)

Once I get my laptop disk drive cleaned up a bit from trash, I will have a second hardware install of Windows 11. This one should be 100% Windows 11 supported.

Hi there
I 'm actually HUMAN at least I hope so !!-- if the original question is answered correctly.

However I use both VM's and real hardware -- with some VM's you can use a tiny OS overhead and pass thru real hardware to the VM so you are effectively running on "bare metal". You need to have a separate GPU, available extra processor in an MP environment, Raw physical disk drives, extra LAN NIC - and set IOMMAX to ON in the BIOS (or its equivalent setting) .

HYPER-V, ESXi, and KVM/QEMU allow this type of thing -- you should even be able to get games playing as per normal hardware on these systems. I think XEN does too - but that's a dying system - and anybody whose ever had the misfortune on a corporate or LAN work system whose ever had to put up with CITRIX I'm sure will understand why that system is ready for the scrapheap.

VBOX/VMWare run VM's differently with a great deal of paravirtualisation and so also as well as having to "emulate" hardware they also have more HOST OS overhead -- not to say these aren't good systems for people with modest needs when running VM's.

@Kari --have you tried a HYPER-V VM running with as much "Real Hardware" as possible passed thru to the VM -- I've seen in the literature that it's eminently do-able and worth the effort if you have sufficient hardware available. Would be interesting to compare with a typical "default" VM on a HYPER-V host and a native Windows installation.

Cheers
jimbo
