I would try Windows 11 on a spare hard disk, install latest Windows 10 drivers for the Asus card and see. There is a chance that the Asus software runs OK in Windows 8 compatibility mode.

Thanks. I posted to alert other users of ASUS sound cards.
I don't plan to go to Windows 11 any time soon and I have a VM to explore it but I may do what you suggest anyway.

I got round to trying this and I was pleasantly surprised to find that my ancient Xonar D2X works well with Win 11 using the same driver version as Win 10. Asus has updated the info on their website to say that the Xonar D2X is now at EOL. So double good!

I found that the audio drivers for my motherboard that are available are for Win 10.. they work fine.

In general any Windows Vista 64-bit and higher works in Windows 11 with some rare exceptions. Intel graphics drivers for Windows 7 are known to be made deliberately incompatible with Windows 8 and newer to force us upgrade our computers. In that case we can install Windows Vista drivers (if available) or let Windows Update install the Microsoft driver for this specific Intel model. We will only lose access to Intel Graphics Properties.

Honestly, I hope someone figures out how to sue these driver and OS folk for using drivers and OSes to force hardware upgrades. This kind of thing is starting to get really out of hand.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
@davewin11

Easy way to fix this --

1) mount macrium image of your W10 system -- I assume you've a backup somewhere.

2) in Windows 11 go to system->device manager

3) against the device -->update driver

4) choose browse this PC and check the box include subfolders

5) point to windows\system32\DriverStore from the W10 system

Should find the drivers - easy solution.

I had quite a few on a new W11 install (not via WU) and loads of hardware needed drivers -- the W10 trick worked perfectly.

cheers

Even better backup your Windows 10 drivers before installing 11. After installation open Device Manager and for any missing driver right-click, Update Drivers, select second option, again second option, click on Have disk and browse to the folder you backup the drivers.

Old school way, safer, always working, best: Keep a backup for every working driver installer on a folder such as C:\DRIVERS. Every time you download a new driver (preferably from manufacturer), keep a copy in that folder. Before installing Windows 11 copy that folder to a USB Flash drive. Install Windows 11, then install all drivers starting from the chipset (platform) driver and then the graphics driver. You should have no missing drivers, unless one of them (rather unlikely) doesn't work in Windows 11.

The sales technique of a manufacturer refusing to update drivers for a new OS, (even when many others do this without any issue), to try to drive sales of their hardware is a long used practice. First notable with Creative Labs during the switch from Windows XP to Windows Vista. It did backfire on Creative to an extent as many users looked at other manufacturers and found that their hardware was as good as Creative and often cheaper so switched for good.

Personally since the incident I have never supplied, Used, or specified a Creative product from that time to the present.

Now there may be changes to the coding of the OS that means that a specific product line or product will not work with a new OS release and this is unfortunate but acceptable, especially if the hardware uses 3rd party components that is the cause of the issue, but the blatant profiteering that we do see is totally unacceptable

For old Creative sound cards such as Creative SoundBlaster Live, in Windows Vista 32-bit and above you can install the Windows XP drivers. For Windows Vista 64-bit and above you have to install the third party driver KX audio driver. Not my favorite solution (using third-party drivers like in Linux), but it works.

PS: At the site it says it won't load in Windows 10 64-bit because is unsigned. In that case restart in test mode (ignore driver signatures), install the driver and then restart in normal mode.

I use headphones exclusively on my main desktop pc. Asus Xonar AE (running current ASUS driver: XonarAE_Setup_1.1.19) doesn't even show headphones as an option in my recent install of Windows 11. What the h*ll?

Some cards do not have a separate "headphones" output. It is the same speakers/headphones output, so you should see it as "Asus speakers" or similar. In my laptop it says "Realtek speakers" if I connect either speakers or headphones to the output. It doesn't have any means to distinguish between the two. You can change the default icon though, if you prefer to see headphones instead of speakers.

I should have been more descriptive in my post above. The problem is that ASUS still doesn't have functioning Win 11 drivers for their current sound cards:

For sound at my desk, I use a set of Sennheiser HD600 headphones with a 1/4" plug into an ASUS Xonar AE sound card. These headphones aren't form factor compatible with motherboard headphone jacks (the onboard Realtek audio). When I installed Win 11, the Xonar sound card jack became non-functional, due to driver issues. Unlike the OP with an older sound card, the current Xonar model does not support headphone use in Win 11 with the only available (Win 10) drivers. ASUS promised functioning drivers for Feb 2022, this has been pushed back to May 2022. We'll see if that pans out...

To be totally honest, If I decide to use headphones, (I'm the only one here and so can crank the music up if I wish, over full 5.1), I'll use blueTooth headphones, they've come a long way in the past few years

The only time I used headphones was when I recorded myself playing guitar. It kept the background noises out.,

Unfortunately, I'm pretty much all in on the "headfi" thing. For music and gaming, it's hard to beat a proper sound card or a good headphone amp and a set of good headphones. At my desk at home, speakers don't cut it for music or gaming due to the sound bleeding into my wife's office (she works at home). Plus, after years of enjoying a hifi headphone system, computer speakers don't sound that good. I use headphones in the living room for music and tv for the same reason: my wife prefers a quiet room; I like to turn it up. I do use Bluetooth headphones with my phone and for travel, and they are pretty good these days, but they don't really compare that well with the various hifi setups.
