Solved Audio in computer cannot get to amp

Homebuilt running Win 11 Pro 21H2 Build 22000.1165
Troubleshooter reports "An unexpected error occurred."
Audio signals are visible in diagnostic software and recorder.
Sound was fine one day gone the next, ordinary shutdown-restart.
Nothing comes out of the speaker socket in the back.
An update to the most recent Win 11 21H2 occurred six days earlier.

Outside of the usual things such as using the light green output socket, checking the front panel socket not in use [turns off the rear socket] and checking with a headset or another set of speakers, one might hover the mouse over the speaker icon on the Notification Area, recently had a Notebook show No sound device detected situation, turned out to be a bad sound adapter on the motherboard which was replaced under warranty.

Thanks, Berton, When I built this box, I did not connect the front panel speaker output. Hovering the mouse over the icon gets "Speakers 100%"
Not knowing anything, I suspect the "unexpected error" message in the troubleshooter is trying to tell me something but I don't know what.

This is another case of incorrect driver. Although it appears successfully installed, no sound (or distorted sound in other cases) comes out of the speakers. Usually an incorrect Realtek audio driver is the culprit. Either it is for a different Realtek model, or your audio card is not Realtek. Go to Settings, Applications, Installed Applications, find the Realtek driver (or anything else related to audio driver) and uninstall it. Restart your computer and the appropriate driver should be installed automatically. If it is not, go to manufacturer support site and download and install the audio driver for your model. If you have a custom built computer, go to the motherboard support site to find the audio driver. It doesn't have to be Windows 11, any Vista 64-bit or newer 64-bit driver should work.

Got support from MS yesterday. The tech, who called himself Christian Bob (very strange), took control and reset all the drivers using the command line. No joy. I am going out to Gigabyte as a last resort and may just buy a sound card to bypass the problem. Thanks for all of your help. This is closed.

No one mentioned this but, have you gone to Gigabyte's site for your board and downloaded and installed the sound drivers?

And I own several Gigabyte boards, including one for main system seen in my system specs.

Like I said, an incorrect sound driver muting the sound. Once the appropriate driver is installed sound works properly. As a computer technician I have seen many similar cases.

Attention Dru2 and spapakons (who seem to know the most):

Yesterday, at precisely 1900 (Mountain zone) of the Coordinated Universal Clock, my recently restored sound blew out. Preparatory to recording a music program which starts at that time, I was watching the clock display with sound playing as the numbers rolled over and silence exploded. It felt like I heard a "pop," but probably not Wanting to record that program (it recorded), I did not troubleshoot at the time, but shut down 'til this morning.

No audio after start-up. Re-installing the Gigabyte drivers that solved my original problem yesterday put me back where I started with no audio because, "An unexpected error occurred."

This is the strangest driver problem I have ever encountered. I am at a loss.

At this point I would be using a bootable Linux Mint LiveDVD and check if the hardware actually works without Windows being involved. As part of diagnosing the issue I mentioned earlier I did just that.

What I have is Total Recorder, an app that recorded a radio program after the sound quit and displays the squiggly lines that represent the audio signal. I listened to that program using the same amplifier in the FM tuner mode. Earlier, I disconnected the audio cable from the computer and plugged it in to a pocket radio headphone jack and listened to that radio showing that everything from the green socket to the speakers works.

On Dru2's suggetion, I downloaded drivers from Gigabyte and installed them yesterday which solved my problem until 7 PM.

"until 7PM" Is that when it quite working again?

I have Total Recorder and set it to record anything that gets to the speaker jack.

As for Linux, it's a downloaded .iso file that is used to create an exact copy of the original DVD which is bootable, can run included programs or be used to install to the computer's drive [wipes the drive so have to be careful]. What I use: Download Linux Mint 21 - Linux Mint

PESE is rather good, but I find Strelec's better.

DON'T GET OLD, you forget stuff.
I was never able to get the bootable Linux BUT, last summer when I finally installed Win 11, I kept the old Win 10 on a separate M.2 chip. When I finally remembered having Win 10 and booting it, the sound worked just fine. This is entirely a Win 11 driver problem which I still don't know how to fix.

Uninstall all drivers from Settings, Applications, Installed Applications. Search for Device Manager, open it, go to Sound and video adapters, click on the audio card and uninstall it. Restart the computer. Windows should automatically install a working audio driver.

Never mind I see you solved the issue. BTW, there should be no Windows 11 issues with that board as yours is newer than mine, and I've never had an issue with it under 11.
