I found my Iphone backups were larger than I expected. I traced through the various menus, and I discovered the iphone was backing up folders from Onedrive as well, significantly increasing iphone backup size and backup time.
I run through my onedrive files online and made sure I was not sharing any files. Despite this, the iphone still wanted to backup around 10GB of onedrive files which is pointless as it just wastes iCloud space.
I could not find any reason why iphone selected some files to backup from onedrive.
After a bit of faffing around, I discovered I could exclude onedrive from the iPhone backup and this has done the job, also making the backup much quicker. I now also optionally exclude local data on iphone that I have also previously backed up to onedrive on my pc.
After some analysis, I found that the iphone backup is actually quite small if you just keep to IOS, apps and settings.
Most of my user data is stored in onedrive as I have 1TB of cloudspace. Even so, for convenience, the free 5GB iCloud is a bit limiting, so I decided to lease 50 GB (only £1 per month) which is enough for my backups plus any temporary data not yet backed up to onedrive.
So in simple terms, if you use iPhone Backup, exclude Onedrive from the iCloud backup (unless data is so critical of course).
