Would like to hide a nvme storage drive, trying to do it in the register editor. I can do it by hand but a bat file would be faster. Something like this with two different files on desktop.

Hide with this HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
“NoDrives”=dword:33554432

Show with this HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
“NoDrives”=dword:0

Thinking I might have to do a restart for it to take affect, is there a way to not do a restart and run these two bat files?

Normally you'd restart Explorer.
Code:
reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer" /v NoDrives /t REG_DWORD /d 33554432 /f
taskkill /f /im explorer.exe & start explorer

I think you'd only need to restart Explorer.exe. These two commands in a batch file will do that for you.

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe start explorer.exe

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

unsupported machine: Legacy bios, MBR, TPM 1.2, upgraded from W10 to W11 using W10/W11 hybrid install media workaround. In-place upgrade to 22H2 using ISO and a workaround. Feature Update to 23H2 by manually installing the Enablement Package.

You could simply write a little script to remove the drive letter, which would effectivly hide the disk.

As an example, this will remove the drive letter for volume #2 which currently has the drive letter Z. That drive will no longer show up in File Explorer, etc.

(echo select volume 2
echo remove letter=z
echo exit
) | diskpart > NUL

You may want to add additional logic to the batch file to determine the correct drive letter and volume number for the drive in question in order to make this foolproof, but that's pretty easy to do.

To unhide:

(echo select volume 2
echo assign letter=z
echo exit
) | diskpart > NUL

NOTE: In place of echo assign letter=z you can use echo assign and that would simply assign the first available drive letter rather than a specific letter.

NOTE: Volume 2 is just an example. You need to determine the volume number. Inside of diskpart you can run the command "list volume" to get the volume numbers. That's why I said you might want to add additional code to determine the correct volume number. This is just a framework.
