Is there anything that'll let me manage custom folder icons easily and export the settings etc? Everything I can find is for win8 etc.

Thanks in advance.

Hmm, that seems to be for making icon packs, I'm talking about when you set a specific icon for a specific folder, I want to do it for loads, but it doesn't persist on reinstalls so some way of exporting that info and importing it again would be great.

This might be it, but I can't tell from their description about setting and saving icons for individual folders etc. Don't like to install trials that i'll just uninstall 5 mins later and leave junk files everywhere. Might just be a collaboration tool.

Oh thanks. I actually tried that last night but I didn't see any options for making your own icons. Does that only show up with a paid license or something? Usually their stuff is fully free for 30 days. I'll try it again anyway.
It's not as versatile as that I'm afraid but there are free downloadable icon sets. What I like about it is that after every Feature update or insider build update it's a one click restore to your preference.

seems you can only change the icons of system locations or icons already there, no way to add your own directories / files and apply specific icons to them. something like that with the ability to restore them is what I'm after.

If you change icons on non system disks or for shortcuts, they will remember it even after a clean install, as long as icon's path is the same, like in onedrive or on non system disks as well. I use a shortcut for a quick access to change system icons.
Code:
C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,,0

Oh cool thanks. I'll just keep the icons on another partition then so they're always in the same place.

rather than make a new topic another icon related question; I upgraded from w10 to 11 and I hate the little image previews on folders with images inside of them, how do you just keep the folder icon? I've found ways to disable thumbnails altogether but that's not what I want.

You can setup the default icon. But the default default will not do, because %SystemRoot%\System32\SHELL32.dll contains multiple.
Code:
reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons" /v "3" /t REG_SZ /d "D:\OneDrive\Pictures\MLP Icons\Folders\Folder - UserFluttershy.ico" /f
reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons" /v "4" /t REG_SZ /d "D:\OneDrive\Pictures\MLP Icons\Folders\fluttericon.ico" /f
reg add "HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons" /v "3" /t REG_SZ /d "D:\OneDrive\Pictures\MLP Icons\Folders\Folder - UserFluttershy.ico" /f
reg add "HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons" /v "4" /t REG_SZ /d "D:\OneDrive\Pictures\MLP Icons\Folders\fluttericon.ico" /f

I just realized that wasn't some generic fix and it has custom parts. doh. nevermind. I got it.

Am I doing this right?

Code:
reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons" /v "3" /t REG_SZ /d "D:\Documents\System Setup\Themes and Icons\Lumicons\Icons\System\Folder Yellow.ico" /f
reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons" /v "4" /t REG_SZ /d "D:\Documents\System Setup\Themes and Icons\Lumicons\Icons\System\Folder Yellow.ico" /f

not getting a change

I removed those entries and reset my imageres.dll to the stock one, applied icon theme fresh, but those icons the registry modified are still janked up - could someone give me the default entries to import please?

Download folder icon you like from the internet and then replace the file path based on it's location.

For example, if you download icon in the attachment, unpack it to downloads folder, this should do:
Code:
reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons" /v "3" /t REG_SZ /d "%USERPROFILE%\Downloads\Default (with files) 01.ico" /f
reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons" /v "4" /t REG_SZ /d "%USERPROFILE%\Downloads\Default (with files) 01.ico" /f
reg add "HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons" /v "3" /t REG_SZ /d "%USERPROFILE%\Downloads\Default (with files) 01.ico" /f
reg add "HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons" /v "4" /t REG_SZ /d "%USERPROFILE%\Downloads\Default (with files) 01.ico" /f
taskkill /im explorer.exe /f & explorer.exe

Thank you. I tried it and it seemed to work, along with sfc/dism/resetting imageres (I did a bunch of stuff all at once so no idea), but then I applied my 7tsp theme again, and those same icons are still messed up:

Am I gonna have to reinstall to fix this?

Thanks for the help really appreciate the effort.

Edit: If I make a new folder and move the contents from one of the 'broken icon' ones, the icon goes from good to bad - it's something to do with the thumbnails on the icon? But also other icons are broken (see the samba shortcuts at the top which are just a big shortcut icon which is wrong)

Edit2: Oh also, I've been making regular snapshots, and I reverted to one from earlier thinking it'd fix it but strangely did not, system restore doesn't touch the registry?
Edit3: Apparently it does according to google. It must not have been far back enough. Was awake all night working on stuff and time has lost all meaning.

Can someone tell me what the default registry entries are for
Code:
reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons" /v "3" /t REG_SZ /d "%USERPROFILE%\Downloads\Default (with files) 01.ico" /f
reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons" /v "4" /t REG_SZ /d "%USERPROFILE%\Downloads\Default (with files) 01.ico" /f
reg add "HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons" /v "3" /t REG_SZ /d "%USERPROFILE%\Downloads\Default (with files) 01.ico" /f
reg add "HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons" /v "4" /t REG_SZ /d "%USERPROFILE%\Downloads\Default (with files) 01.ico" /f
taskkill /im explorer.exe /f & explorer.exe

? I simply can't seem to fix this and really don't want to have to reinstall windows because of it after I just got everything sorted :(

By default those entries do not exist, you can remove them, maybe it will reset them.

Oh. Ok I think I have figured it out. In 7tsp you can 'remove custom pack', maybe the icon pack I am applying was modified somehow and when I apply it I am just applying the 'broken' icons again and again, so I'll redownload it and re-add it to the tool. This seems like it. Thanks.

Okay well it's not the pack or 7tsp, I think windows is somehow still saving these changes, because I can apply another icon pack, and the icons are fine - if I apply that same pack with the problem after removing it from 7tsp and adding a freshly downloaded one, they are broken again. where could windows be saving this? I made sure to replace both my imageres and imageres backup file with the stock one from the ISO, so it can't be that it's swapping between broken and working imageres files as they are the same.
