Solved BIOS checksum - should I be worried?

I updated the BIOS for my Gigabyte X570 board today. The BIOS file from Gigabyte shows the checksum as 1CD3 on their download page. When I go to install it, the system verifies the BIOS but shows the checksum as 98FE. It installs without error and everything seems fine.

To be honest I've never taken much notice of this but wondered why they would be different?

Did you have to rename the BIOS file before you flashed the BIOS?

Nope, I just used the file as it was in the .zip folder, extracted it to the USB stick

It did the same for me. I extracted it to my desktyop and checked the checksum... it changed.
I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I once worried too much... it started to make me short, fat and bald. So I quit worrying so much. :-)

I think it's more likely we're doing something incorrectly.

If you flash the BIOS and the computer still functions... then you're already ahead of the game. :cool:

Maybe the Checksum is for the zipped file? Would be nice if Gigabyte showed the correct one to avoid worry! It's probably done it with previous BIOS flashes but I never took any notice

I tried checking the whole zipped file as well. I don't get either what Gigabyte or what you reported, no matter how I checked it. LOL

I think either we're doing something wrong... or Gigabyte is just getting sloppy.
I also checked all the right click CRC and SHA numbers as well... for both the file and the zip.

Weird, oh well I won't worry about it. If I get chance I'll switch to the other BIOS and try flashing F35 to see if that Checksum is right.

Try this... download ANY of the BIOS files for that motherboard... and run the checksum.
My money says... none of them will match.

Further... Gigabyte has only been supplying the checksum since the F33h BIOS

How do they get the four-character Checksum? I know how to get the full hash code for a file but don't know how that corresponds

I assume the first four digits... but I don't really know.

I just checked all these (on the file and on the zip), and none of them have 1CD3 for either the 1st four or last four digits...

So... I don't know what Gigabyte is referring to.


Seems lot of folks have this problem... it looks like the 4 digit check sum only shows in the Gigabyte QFlash utility.

Hi BrianInEngland. I just have to ask... Why did you update the BIOS in the first place? The reason I ask is that updating the BIOS can be quite risky. If your hardware and system are running with no errors or issues there is no reason to update the BIOS. Leave the BIOS as is. If you are a hardcore gamer, and the BIOS update has what you really need! Which I doubt. I recommend leaving the BIOS as is and not messing with it. Just to reiterate... Leave the BIOS as is if your system runs normally. Just My Two Cents...

I've used the MD5 & SHA Checksum Utility for a number of years to verify the accuracy of the downloaded file. The number it extracts from the file should be the same as shown on the site the file comes from.

Each to their own, there hasn't been a non-Beta BIOS for my board since earlier this year, 10 months ago. This new one has the updated AGESA 1.2.0.7.

I just checked all these (on the file and on the zip), and none of them have 1CD3 for either the 1st four or last four digits...

Seems lot of folks have this problem... it looks like the 4 digit check sum only shows in the Gigabyte QFlash utility.

OK I checked with BIOS F35, the checksum in the BIOS flash shows the same as on the website 84E4.
I also re-downloaded the F36 BIOS from Gigabyte and the Checksum still shows as 98FE not 1CD3

Also, what I use to update my Gigabyte boards. Never an issue. This is with Intel boards, as I've never used AMD boards.

I believe that the checksum that you see on the Gigabyte website is part of the hash for the actual downloaded file. The checksum for the BIOS has always been different for me as well. I just assumed the original checksum is verification for the download. I have never had any issues, so I have never complained. It is a bit of a puzzler though.

That's kind of reassuring I guess! But the F35 BIOS is downloaded the same way and that matches when I verify it for install 🤔
