You will probably remember my long thread some time back about my concern about TPM/Pin/bios update. Well I'm in a fix and don't know how to get out of it. At the time I removed my pin, went back to using a password, and all was well...I thought.

In response to all the kernel power event 137 errors I was getting when I put the PC to sleep, the Dell technician came today and replaced my motherboard again. When he put it all back together, the PC booted fine, was running bios 1.5.1, required a password through several boots, and the kernel power error did not happen through several sleeps..

Within 30 minutes of him leaving, the PC went into a bios update ON ITS OWN and updated to bios 1.6 (which is what I had on the old motherboard.)

Upon restart after the bios updated, the PC forced me make a pin. I had NO OPTION to enter my password.. So to get into it I made a pin. Now here's what my SignIn Options page looks like. Each and every option is grayed out. I tried Brink's bat file to remove the pin but it didn't work. I have absolutely no control of any of these settings now, when I did before. How do I get control of these setting again? Don't anyone tell me that a bios update can't change the way you get into your computer and the control you have over it.
The kernel power errors are still gone and I now have the proper power options in powercfg -a so at least that problem was solved.

No, there is no admin bios password. I am now going to restore my system from a backup. I will report back within 15 minutes IF I'm allowed into the system at all. This is such a bunch of crap.

OK I'm writing this post on my second computer. I restored from a backup I made 2 days ago. My signin page asked for my password and I entered it. It immediately went into the "setup a pin" again and I am unable to get past it without setting up a pin. I haven't had to make a pin since @Edwin gave me the registry hack back in Dec.. I've left the PC on that page. I know when I do, all the signin options will be grayed out again. It's the stupid bios forcing this on me.

I think the problems you're having are due to the fact that it's a prebuilt computer.
You will never have "complete" control over the system.
A "clean install" may help a bit, but that has it's own problems on a prebuilt.

Solution: Keep calling DELL, until they get it fixed.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
I always do a clean install on a new laptop, especially a Dell.

1) Check registry settings
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PolicyManager\default\Settings\AllowSignInOptions
Value key should be at 1

2) Something is managing the system. Did you try to create a new user with admin rights to see if you have the same limits?

3) You can also search the group policy and see what's activated

I always do a clean install
I always do the same and did on 10/5. Second user is the same. I scanned group policy last night and didn't see anything but wasn't sure exactly what I was looking for. I haven't been well the last few days so didn't want to change things I didn't fully understand until I had a clear head and could think them through. The restore from backup should have set me to rights. I have a Windows 10 backup made in Oct. that I will try and then it will be another clean install but I really don't think it will make any difference. Control was taken over when the bios changed and since Dell restricts a user from downgrading the bios, I'm kind of stuck there.

Since Dell has no one working in their labs, the whole intent and purpose Dell had to changing the motherboard was to get the machine back on the old bios so we could deal with the the kernel power errors but the resident alien did not let me stay on the old bios very long. Out of the box, the new mobo had bios 1.5 which solved the kernel power problem, but as soon as the machine was connected to the internet, the bios updated on it's own. The kernel power problems are still gone, but the machine is locked down tighter than a jug. Factory default reset on bios doesn't change anything.

EDIT: I will be in Dallas all day going to doctors but will see if the registry is correct when I get back tonight and let you know. Can't for the life of me understand how a bios update could have changed it. Thanks @Zardoc.

Can you turn off the TPM in the BIOS and see if you can sign in with a password?

I also tend to think that TPM seems to be playing games. My client had a bunch of security settings set on his Dell laptop (Win 10). I shut everything down.

I would also suggest following @Winuser suggestion. I'd turn off everything that is TPM related and try to boot with password.

Hope your feeling better. 😊

I hope you feel better soon. I was in your area back the mid or late 80's. A fellow worker and I flew from Philadelphia to Dallas Fort Worth airport. From there we took a small plane to Waco. Our employer sent us to the TYMCO Regenerative Air sweeper factory for a 3-day course then we drove the sweeper back to N.J. That was the first time I flew.

@humbird suggestion led me to a setting in group policy regarding setting up a pin which I set to not configured and @Zardoc suggestion took care of all the grayed out options in both mine and my Test account which was a local account in the first place. That was the exact same registry entry that I changed to 0 in Dec. after I removed my pin and went back to a password so as not to constantly get the 'set up a pin' nag.

Once I was able to get access to the options again I solved this once and for all. I hate what I'm giving up but I changed to a local account. I wish MS and Win11 had TPM and pins stuck where the sun don't shine. It's almost enough to make me stick with 10. I'll have to use that PC to keep my Onedrive stuff synced. Maybe at some point in time after Windows 11 gets a little age on her, I'll change my mind and go back to a MS account in 11.

Ho-hum...just when one gets to feeling comfortable and thinking they might know a little bit of something, something crazy happens and you realize you don't know diddly squat.

Maybe you can get the benefits of a Microsoft account without actually switching to one.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Yep, back in business. I'm getting ready to trying @Bree suggestion. I didn't know one could do such a thing but it sounds promising.

Good to see you have it working. My fingerprint reader is built into my start/shutdown button, so it makes it easier to login automatically. I still had to set a password and then pin to login first run though. I do not let windows update my drivers. Windows updated my BIOS clear up to 1.37 after I updated it myself up to 1.33 and it added the capsule method. then windows took over and with every BIOS update my battery started acting worse. I found someone from the matebook x pro reddit forum who had all of the BIOS saved on github and was able to downgrade to 1.29 (the only one that lets you downgrade and does not add the windows capsule method) My battery is not acting up now and I do not let windows update any of my drivers anymore. Lesson learned. Good luck if you try the other method so you can have a Microsoft account.
