Bluetooth headset shown as connected, but is not available to play audio

I have Bluetooth headphones which have worked fine with my laptop for a few months. However, I recently turned them on and noticed that they did not connected for voice and audio as they normally do. This means that they are connected over Bluetooth but they cannot be used to play audio. It is not a problem with the headset, since they work fine with my phone. I have tried pairing and unpairing, installing Windows updates, installing and reinstalling Bluetooth drivers and other drivers, and the other solutions provided by Microsoft with no success. Is this just an issue with this latest version of windows 11, or is there something else I can do to fix this problem?

Sometimes Windows doesn't switch over correctly even though the Bluetooth headphones are connected. In the sys tray click the sound icon then the right facing arrow to the right of the volume slider. See if the headphones are selected.

And if that doesn't work, click the More volume settings at the bottom and examine all your output devices - maybe even try disabling them and re-enabling them one by one, to see if it starts working again (this is done by slecting each device, then clicking the Don't allow button to the far right).

Headset device is missing here as well. I will investigate further. I did update the drivers from Dell, so will see if that cures the problem.

Is the battery charge OK for the headsets?

I have found Bluetooth to be a little flaky sometimes. The headsets had previously worked but now don't. The headsets shows up in Bluetooth devices but just don't connect. To get them to work again I had to delete them from Bluetooth devices and repair them.

Sometimes earphones have to be unpaired from the phone before they can then be re-paired with the computer.
I've never found any pattern to this or, indeed, any logic to it.

Best of luck,
Denis

Ahh, gotcha.

Battery charge is fine, and they don't show up in any sound settings menus.

OK, so not a device issue. That rules that out.

I've had to Remove BT devices and re-pair them numerous times!

Yeah, I had issues with older devices, and especially in older, pre-22H2 builds. On 22H2 I've not had to do this very much at all, headest (cans), earbuds, XBox controller or mouse. All have been pretty rock solid.

Sometimes earphones have to be unpaired from the phone before they can then be re-paired with the computer.
I've never found any pattern to this or, indeed, any logic to it.

Best of luck,
Denis

@Blargius - Denis makes a good point - older devices don't like being paired to multiple devices simultaneously. Newer ones do not seem to mind. My Pixel Buds Pro can connect to 2 different devices simultaneously, but I typically use them with 4-5 devices. They are always paired with my phone, and usually paired with my PC, but if I go to watch TV and force pair them to the TV, or my ChromeCast, then sometimes (not always) I will have to re-connect them to the PC again.

Is it a newer headset that advertises / can connect to multiple devices simultaneously?

Also - did the headphones come with an app to use on Windows, or a driver? Have you checked the manufacturer to see if there is a firmware update for the headphones?

Its simple really, mine do the same thing occasionally, but just UNpair your headphones, turn off bluetooth and back on and REpair them and whalla.

Most BT devices endeavor to memorize the last connected state, so, if you ping-pong between devices it may become glitchy!
My Jabra products were terrible for this until I initiated numerous firmware updates.

I just tried unpairing, turning Bluetooth off and on again, and repairing it, but it still doesn't work. The headphones are (were) able to connect to both my laptop and phone at the same time but only play audio from one at a time. I have unpaired them from the phone and repeated the process now with the same result. I have attached a screen snip of the devices settings page if that is relevant. Usually, where it says Connected, it also says "Voice, Audio."
