I built my computer in January 2025. Realistically, how long should I keep my boxes? The monitor has a warranty of 3 years, the power supply has a warranty of 2 years, etc.

Ditch the boxes when the warranty expires. After that it would be cheaper to take them to a computer shop if they needed attention.

I keep the boxes of things I purchase in a stack in the garage. Once I get rid of an item, I throw away the box.
This applies to small appliances as well. For example, I keep my iPhone's little box in that stack of boxes. Once I trade in the phone, I will throw away the iPhone's box.

I don't keep the boxes as a rule after a couple of months. I just don't have room to store an infinite collection of boxes for everything that comes into the house! Once I've gotten past the infant mortality stage for electronics, it's time for the boxes to go.

I don't keep the boxes of anything past the day its store warranty expires. The one time I had to send a computer back to the OEM for warranty repair, they send me a prepaid box to return it in. Apple does the same thing if my iOS devices need to be sent back.

In addition, keeping boxes for components you want to resell when you upgrade can help them sell faster.

Even if you just give away stuff, it can be a lot safer to ship some components (monitors, for example) in their original packaging.

However, my basement has far too many boxes for electronics.

I agree that monitors would be difficult to ship, especially my LG 45" wide curved monitor. I actually have saved that box as I can't imagine any other way to ship it if necessary. OTOH, it's been working just fine, and I'll probably deep-six the box at some point as it's huge! The other monitors I have are ancient though they still work. They're old 1080p 24" and 27" monitors that still have VGA connections with the original HDMI. Those boxes are long gone.

This is also my reasoning for keeping boxes.

Otherwise, a company can’t reject a return or repair just because of the original box. As long as it’s packaged and sent safely I don’t believe consumer rights have been violated, especially not in Australia my Aussie brother from an American mother. Consumer laws are very much sided with the consumer here.

If it wouldn't tip off the hoarding police and put me on TV, I would post a pic of my garage as it is now. Adding boxes to the mix would really bury me under a mountain of crap that I saved because I thought I might need it someday..

It seems to be pretty common for garages to be used for anything but parking a vehicle. Especially in parts of the US where houses are slab built.

Very true, but I never understood that. Where are you going to park the toys if you store a bunch of rubbish in the garage? Some toys should not be allowed to see rain - ever

But maybe that's why I only keep boxes for larger purchases like laptops. For a desktop with tons of boxes, I won't even try. They go into recycling 30 days after everything is assembled and working since 30 days is the immediate return policy for places like Amazon.

I have a two-car garage and there are two cars in there! I can't understand giving a bunch of junk preference over my comfort! When it's snowing and blowing or torrential rains, I like getting into the car nice and dry and driving away.

Also, cars last longer are require less care if they're garage kept. All my computer equipment or other stuff doesn't equal the prices we paid for the two cars, so I'll keep them tucked in warm and the other stuff can fend for itself.

I’ve decided to keep the boxes while the warranties are still in effect. I’m keeping the smaller ones. That is helping save on space a bit.

My husband is a bigger packrat than me. NOT ONCE since we moved in has a vehicle been inside that garage. Yeah, I know. It doesn't make any damn sense. I'd bet if we ever got to the bottom of it all, there would be boxes we never unpacked when we moved in.. And don't get me started on the 40x50 shop he has that is wall to wall ......sh.., I mean stuff.

Preach, brother! At one point in time my cars were worth more than the house, so they got preferential treatment.

I moved out of a huge house with a 3-car garage, and I had three cars in it! Yes, the attic was full of stuff that we never used, and when we moved after 30 years in that house, there were a bunch of boxes that were never unpacked from the previous move! It shouldn't take much guessing to know where that stuff when when we moved! :lmao:
