My PC just locked on a black screen after last nights 11 update. Fortunatley there WAS a system restore from 2 days ago and fortunaetly it WORKED. My previous experience of this is there often isn't a stsem restore and if there is it doesnt work.
Anyone else have problems?

Running 22H2 on an HP Omen Desktop.

Most of us use 3rd party backup software, just for times like this. ^^

No problems here, I suggest you stop relying on just system restore and start using an imaging app like Macrium, Aoemi etc.
There are plenty of these sort of apps, some paid, others free for home use & some open source.
Check the tutorial section of this site for how to setup and use such apps and the threads on backups for user choices and methods.

I normally use freefilesync and 2 x 2Tb HD's but I've lost them! Have used Macrium to set up an M2 ssd for laptopo but seems very compicated for me.

AOMEI Backupper is a bit simpler.
And here is a guide for Macrium...

This morning I had to do a system restore again and I see its wanting to install an update again. How do I permanently avoid this update but still get all others?

You can block an update you don't want in Windows Update with the wushowhide troubleshooter tool.

If an update causes problems, you can hide an update that's caused problems until Microsoft has fixed it.

Install them one by one, make a note of which work and which don't and write down the KB number of the one that's causing an issue.

Uninstall it and use the tool to hide it.

It is like a 5 step or so back up and restore process. If you've done it once or twice, it is very easy after that. Continue using macrium. It is a life saver.

Yup. Driver updates are seldom a problem but if one is an issue, you have to establish which one might lead to instability.

To be honest, if you do a reinstall now, you'll be over this sooner. Just reinstall your program one at a time when you need them. Then when you think you have everything back, create an image back up so you can restore your system like nothing happened when you encounter future problems. As it stands right now, this is your fastest resolution. Don't prolong your agony.

Can someone explain what this means?
It means you downloaded and used CrystalDiskMark, a utility for measuring the speed of your drive.

To read the SMART data from your drive you should have downloaded CrystalDiskInfo.
