Hello,

I have a Dell Inspiron 16 2-in-1 (7620) with a 1TB NVMe KIOXIA 1024GB hard drive.

The other day the laptop randomly refused to boot and throws the error

“Error Code 0xc000034 "There is an invalid object in the Boot Configuration Data Store".

I cannot get the laptop to boot to Windows 11 at all and if I try to boot to the windows recovery environment via F1 it doesn't work and the laptop just reboots back to BSOD.

I wanted to check if the NVME was healthy and so I booted to “Seatools” via reconfiguring the Bios boot sequence and running it via a USB drive. Seatools is showing the hard drive is healthy:
  • KBG50ZNS1T02 NVMe KIOXIA 1024GB - NVME
  • Disk 0
  • Free = 1.02 TB (Bit weird the whole disk is showing as free space???)
  • Long Self Test = PASSED
  • Fix All Long = PASSED
I then booted to Parted Magic via USB boot media and it shows the NVME with the following info:

/Dev/nvme0n1
  • P1 = EFI system partition with the label "ESP”
  • P2 = Microsoft reserved partition. This has a warning triangle against it but no drive label?
  • P3 = Basis data partition with the label "OS” This is listed as not mounted???
  • Unallocated
  • P5 = DELL SUPPORT
  • Unallocated
Next I modified the boot config in BIOS and then booted to a freshly created Win11 recovery media (USB) which I created on another laptop.
  1. I booted the Win11 recovery environment via the USB
  2. I tried the "Troubleshoot"then
    • "Start-up repair" option and got the result
    • "Start-up repair couldn't repair your PC. Press advanced options to try top repair your PC, or shut down to turn off your PC. Log file: "
  3. I tried "Advanced Options”then
    1. "Repair my pc" then
    2. "Command prompt" then
    3. “X:\sources> bootrec /FixMbr"
    4. “The operation completed successfully”
    5. “X:\sources> bootrec /FixBoot"
    6. “Access is denied”
    7. “X:\sources> diskpart” then
    8. “DISKPART> list disk”
DISK 0 is showing but it is only showing up as a 28 GB shown with 0 B shown as free space. It doesn’t appear to be showing the 1,024GB NVME drive at all nor any "windows" partitons etc. that I can see in Parted Magic????

Can anyone advise on what might be causing this sudden BSOD and how I fix it please?

p.s. I have posted on the Windows support forum and have been simply advised to reinstall windows but I wondered if there was any other suggestions
p.p.s I do not know hopw to run the V2 Log collector as the only way i can get to command prompt is vis Windows Recovery Media USB. Is it possible in such instances to run V2 Log Collector from there?

Hello,

When I get to "list volume" step it only shows one volume. It doesn't show the volumes I would expect when referring to your video.

Is this only showing the removable usb?

Does this mean I cannot proceed as per the video?

From your screen capture, there's only one disk volume visible (which is your 32 GB USB drive). Go back to BIOS (with the USB drive unplugged) and check how many drives are listed.

Looks like the disk where Windows 11 installed is not detected by your computer, check the cable connections.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply. The BIOS is showing the NVME drive.

Also I can boot to Parted Magic via USB and parted magic can see the NVME and the partitions.

I have run the long test from seatools and the NVME passed those tests...

This is an internal NVME drive in my laptop and is not connected via a cable. Parted Magic and Seagate Sea tools can see and read the disk. I can also resize the OS partition in parted magic if I needed to. The NVME seems healthy / operational.

Indicate whether available / unavailable an empty drive bay of another computer or a HD enclosure for the problematic drive.

Check to see if resetting the BIOS or clearing the CMOS makes any difference:

Hi @Rich964327

1. Please complete the full specifications of your Inspiron 7620 2-in-1 Laptop in "My Computer" ( Please see "My Computer/s" in this post for reference)

2. Did it come with

KIOXIA Former Toshiba Memory EXCERIA G2 NVMe™ Internal D RAM SSD 1TB NVMe M.2 Type 2280 PCIe Gen 3.0 x 4?

3. How old Is your laptop and is it still under warranty? If it is still under warranty have you contacted Dell Support for a resolution?

4. Have you made any hardware changes to your laptop since its purchase?

5. Have you been using DellSupportAssist, for driver,BIOS, SSD firmware updates?

Try this Dell Support article Computer Cannot Boot into Windows | Dell India

If nothing works try to boot into Hiren's BootCD PE x64 (v1.0.8) and then we shall run TestDisk v7.2 to check whether there is any data that can be recovered. In Data recovery nothing is certain, until it becomes certain.

Create a Hiren's BootCD PE on an empty flash drive using Rufus v 4.6 ( Back up any data in the flash drive or-else all data in it will be lost when Rufus formats it during the creation of the Bootable Hiren's PE)

Hirens BootCD PE: Download | Hiren's BootCD PE

rufus-4.6.exe Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way

16-03-2025 11-55-07.webp

Create a bootable Hirens BootCD PE following the instructions here: USB Booting | Hiren's BootCD PE
( Note: Please run Rufus and activate the "Dual UEFI/BIOS" mode first as in the instructions and then select the ISO file. Otherwise, the FAT32 format cannot be selected within Rufus.)

When you are ready and can boot into Hiren's, give me a shout and then we shall run TestDisk. ( Do not, Do not try to run TestDisk on your own. First time user needs to be guided for proper usage. Wait for my instructions.)

Hello,

3. How old Is your laptop and is it still under warranty? If it is still under warranty have you contacted Dell Support for a resolution?
It is 2 years and four months old. I think I am basic support only as the warranty may have lapsed in Nov 2023

4. Have you made any hardware changes to your laptop since its purchase?
No hardware modifications.

5. Have you been using DellSupportAssist, for driver,BIOS, SSD firmware updates?
I was using Dell Support Assist yes
I have tried this:
  1. Hard reset - Cant do this as i cannot disconnect the battery connector without forcing/damaging it
  2. BIOS settings - seem okay and hard drive is visible
  3. Dell Diagnostics - Ran advanced tests and it passed Result is "Pass. Pre-boot diagnostics test passed. No issues were found"
  4. Repair Windows Startup Files - Failed. Windows startup repair does not work
  5. Repair Windows Using SupportAssist OS Recovery - "System repair failed."
When you are ready and can boot into Hiren's, give me a shout and then we shall run TestDisk. ( Do not, Do not try to run TestDisk on your own. First time user needs to be guided for proper usage. Wait for my instructions.)
I have created the bootable USB but have not proceeded and await instructions.

Thanks for your help with this.

"Based on the results so far, which we were not able to fix from the command prompt, and the fact that disk 0 is not showing the normal amount of free storage space in the diskpart command, we suspect that there is some serious damage to the system, as well as the possibility of hardware damage to the disk.

All we can do at this point is try to fix it by reinstalling Windows."

I think this started after the recent Tuesday update by Microsoft which is causing BSOD issues possibly. It was fine before then.
