Windows 11 22H2
I'm using Windows 11 21H2 (Build 22000.1042)
Now I try to activate the CORE ISOLATION.
If I restart after activation, I get a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) und it shows me, that there is a problem with driver hswultpep.sys (see ZIP-file).
Now I try to make a repair-installation (with Version 21H1), but the installation crashes after a few seconds without further information.
Can anyone explain to me why the BSOD is coming and how I can fix this error?

Regards

Samson

Please follow these posting instructions - BSOD - Posting Instructions

But ultimately, that driver isn't going to be compatible with Core Isolation.

That driver is Intel Processor Line Power Engine Plug-in driver and is part of your chipset drivers. You did not say if you have attempted to delete or alter this driver/drivers. A repair install will not help in your case as it is not a OS problem.

If you are able to boot into windows at all, I suggest you go to Intel and run their Intel Driver and Support Assist Tool to update all outdated drivers. Normally I would also suggest you go to the manufacturer site but from what I can tell Medion doesn't offer any. It is a horrible site for support. If the Intel tool will not update your drivers, try Windows Update. Go to the optional updates section of Windows update and apply all WU found. Without an update for that driver, you will be unable to turn on core isolation.

If you are unable to boot into Windows, restore from a backup if you have one. Otherwise, a clean install. With a clean install Windows will attempt to use the best drivers it has. From there , you can then go to Intel. Even after doing this to get yourself back up and running, there is still a possibility you will be unable to turn on core isolation. If a clean install proves necessary, I strongly suggest you temporarily disconnect all other drives except your system drive and then delete all partitions on your system drive so Windows 11 can be installed on unallocated space.

Before I asked in the board, I also ran the Intel Driver and support assistant.
This one has updated 2 old drivers, but not the one that triggers the BSOD.

The MEDION support assistant did not provide any remedy either.
The driver hswultpep.sys has the date 8.2.2013 and is therefore ancient.
I haven't been able to find a more recent version so far.

I see where you are cross-posting on the MS support forum as well. Nothing wrong with that as all ideas can help. I do think taking this issue to Intel would be the way to go. After all, they are the ones who have to release a new driver. Until they do you will have to leave core isolation turned off.

I'm sorry.
The crossposting came from Colif's advice to ask again on this board before I perform a clean installation of Windows 11 version 22H2.
I have therefore described my problem here again, with the hope of avoiding the effort for a new installation.
Colif has already given me a lot of troubleshooting hints in the other board.
In general, I don't do any other crossposting!!
In the meantime, I have also found the page of intel support and posted an error message there.
Of course, I will inform you about the further processing.

As I said , no problem at all with cross posting. I was trying to find someone with a similar problem and ran across the MS post. I was going to advise you some of the same suggestions before I realized it was you. But it would have been a waste of your time to do the same stuff again. A clean install might work, but it could also put you right back in the same situation.

Before you clean install try these suggestions first. https://allthings.how/how-to-fix-incompatible-drivers-error-for-memory-integrity-in-windows-11/
If you are going to clean install anyway, you would lose nothing by trying.
Note you will not have group policy is you run Home edition of 11.

You can try to remove the troublesome driver using terminal as per the instructions. I can not say what the effects will be by removing the driver as I have never heard of Intel Processor Line Power Engine Plug-in driver and have no clue what it does.

I also had a third party driver that kept me from turning on core isolation. It is for a device I still use so in my case, I just left core isolation off.

Let me say this for anyone else who finds this post. When you can't enable core isolation and it kicks out an incompatible driver, there does not have to be a piece of working hardware associated with that driver. The incompatible driver only has to exist where Windows stores its drivers in C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers and in C:\WINDOWS\inf. Windows also maintains a driver cache under the Driverstore directory on your computer in C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository. Often times, old drivers are not always deleted from these folders when a driver gets updated or a driver does not get deleted when a piece of hardware is removed. Therefore, there doesn't have to be a device associated with the incompatible driver in device manager.

But in your case, windows is telling you a device is associated with your particular driver so you'll have to dig a little. Since it is a 3rd party driver by Intel, to save some time, I would start by looking at only the Intel devices as you expand the categories in device manager. Right click on each Intel device, select properties, select driver tab-select driver details. When you find that driver listed, you'll know what device is using it.

You need to pass the /uninstall switch as well. You can't simply delete a driver package which is in use.

There doesn't appear to be any dump files saved? Oh well, either way, there is a compatibility problem with that particular driver which will need to be addressed by Intel.

Just to clarify some important points here: the Driver Store is more than a driver cache. It's the trusted driver store for all drivers which are delivered via Windows Update. The driver packages from this store and then hardlinked into Inf and System32. In actual fact, the "original" copies of the driver packages are under WinSxS and if the older version still exists within that folder, then it will also exist within the Driver Store.

The error was found and the source of it was also identified.
I had a lot of time yesterday and worked through the device manager device by device until I found the device that uses the driver HSWULTPEP.SYS.
There I was offered to reset to an older driver.
Here the driver INTELPEP.SYS was used.
The driver HSWULTPEP.SYS is from 31.1.2013, the INTELPEP.SYS from 20.6.2022, thus clearly more current.
This error also occurred with the latest Windows version 22H2.
As cause I could locate the program "DRIVER UPDATER", which wanted to exchange the current, against the ancient driver.
When I first used DA, I made the mistake of replacing all drivers marked as old.
In the future I will check every driver for this problem and only replace the one that really needs to be changed.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who gave up their time to help me.
The core isolation is now running smoothly!!!

With kind regards

I think I have exactly the same problem. I am interested in the steps to change HSWULTPEP.SYS that you went through. The driver I have is also from 1/30/2013. It is associated with "Intel(R) Core(TM) 4xxxU and 4xxxY Processor Line Power Engine Plug-in". I have been unable to locate a newer driver. It appears you updated the driver with INTELPEP.SYS. I attempted unsuccessfully to do that. You mentioned a tool called "DA". What does that acronym stand for?
Thanks for any guidance

I meant "DU" (Driver Updater).
To find the faulty driver, I searched every entry in the device manager for the driver HSWULTPEP.SYS.
I then found it in the "System Devices" subfolder.
Where exactly I can't say now, because I have installed the current version 22H2 in the meantime.
After I found the entry, I used the button "Previous driver" to remove the faulty driver.
After that everything ran without problems.
I wish you good luck with the repair.

Kindly regards

Samson

Let me say this for anyone else who finds this post. When you can't enable core isolation and it kicks out an incompatible driver, there does not have to be a piece of working hardware associated with that driver. The incompatible driver only has to exist where Windows stores its drivers in C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers and in C:\WINDOWS\inf. Windows also maintains a driver cache under the Driverstore directory on your computer in C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository.

Indeed you are right...... Look at the fight I had with Steinberg about this some time ago........

They eventually updated the driver so it was Windows 11 compatible but not until they were dragged kicking and screaming that way.
