I'm trying to make a Macrium image of my sister-n-law's new laptop before I set it up. I have tried different Macrium rescue disks and get the same problem. The external drive I want to save the image to is seen as the C: drive. The only drives that show are the external drive I want to image to and the Macrium rescue disk. Is there something I need to do first?

Is there a drive letter assigned to the internal HD?

EDIT: If not, here's a link on how to do it:

Have you updated to the latest version of Reflect? There was a known issue for drive letters.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

The answer to both questions is Yes. Macrium was update a short time ago. I made a new Win Re Rescue disk and it didn't work. I'm going to try a new Win PE disk and try again. I want to do an image before I setup the laptop.

It didn't work! the only two drives listed is the Toshiba external drive I want to save the image to and the Macrium rescue disk. The Toshiba drive is listed as drive C; and the Macrium disk is listed as drive D:. The internal drive isn't even listed. Macrium has finally let me down.

Decided to say {blank} it and went ahead and setup the laptop. Before I went any further, I downloaded the free Macrium Reflect and made an Image. I signed in to her MS account and upgraded the laptop out of Win 10 S mode. Now I'm installing updates. the very first update that is installing is the HP Bios Update. I might even upgrade her laptop to Win 11.

You do not say whether you are running Windows 10 or 11?
Depending on which one of these you are using, you need a different Win PE version.

If you are not on the latest version of Macrium Reflect -v 8.0.6392 - update before proceeding.

When creating your Rescue Disc

Select Rescue => Device => Advanced => select the appropriate WIN PE version - see below

aaA.png
If the selected PE version is not on your device, you will be offered a chance to download it from a MS location.

Once downloaded, select 'Build' to create your rescue media.

The installed OS, Windows 10 or 11, has nothing to do with the OS in the WinPE. You can use a WinPE10 in a computer with Windows 11 installed, or vice versa. Or, in principle you can boot with a Linux-based boot media a computer in which either 10 or 11 are instaled, although not with Macrium.

I was advised by Macrium Reflect Support that there is a difference; I was having issues running a Windows PE 10 rescue disk on Windows 11.

Been there, done that and it did not work. Win Re and Win PE 10 would not see the internal drive. I even tried making the Rescue disks on another computer.

I was able to image the drive from within Windows. I wanted an image of the drive before I setup the computer. The only thing I can think of is that the drive is a PCIe NVMe M.2 drive.

I was able to image the drive from within Windows. I wanted an image of the drive before I setup the computer. The only thing I can think of is that the drive is a PCIe NVMe M.2 drive.

Reflect has not actually let you down. NVME drives require the intel irst drivers to work. You need to add these to the recovery drive.

I found on my pc, this did not automatically work if the winre partition was disabled (I use winre rather than winpe). I teenabled the winre partition using reagentc command.

I do not have the Intel RST drivers on my system (and I actually have an Intel 660p NVME M.2 drive), I use the WinRE to create my Macrium USB, I do not add any drivers at all and the disk works fine using all the default settings, picks up the NVME without any issues on Windows 10 and 11.

Have you updated to the latest version of Reflect? There was a known issue for drive letters.

Macrium Reflect Patch Details
That reminds me of Windows XP, where I had to disconnect the card reader everytime, before I run the installer, because XP's installer will make the OS drive a higher letter than C, such as F:!

Vista and later, doesn't have such known issue.

Why not use dism? Isn't that the easiest thing to do?

Huh? OPs issue is internal drive is not being seen in WinRe mode. That is a driver issue. How will dism help?

Never used Macrium, so not sure if it has its own recovery environment. SO thought he could be able to boot into normal Windows Recovery and see the Drives using Diskpart.

So since you wanted to get a pristine image of the disk I assume you built the rescue media on a different computer. Is that correct? If so than it would not necessarily have included the driver necessary for the laptop SSD (as it would/should have if you installed reflect on the laptop and built the rescue media there).

I made the first set of Rescue disks on my laptop that has a NVMe PCIe drive. I made the second set of Rescue disc on my desktop that also has a NVMe PCIe drive. The Rescue disk I first used on the laptop worked when I had to do a restore on my desktop so I don't understand why it didn't work on the laptop.

Not all nvme drives use the same driver, though I would not have expected that it would need anything special besides the Microsoft standard nvme driver. You could try making the building the rescue media from the laptop in question just to see. After all, you will need a workable rescue media if you ever have to restore it.
