What prompted you to delete those registry entries in the first place?

You post isn't very clear, but I do get you can't RDP. With that I'll say if you log into Windows with a Microsoft account, you will need to use those credential to RDP to it. In short, also why you "might" be getting the "user or pass incorrect" message.

As far as any other issues I can't make heads or tails from that post.

i tried these steps , it seems to be after i cleared the registry anyone who have ran into the issue maybe a fix for registry or to detect the rdp port, the issue started after using the commands above , restoring windows did not help

I can't speak to that as I've never had to fiddle with the registry to get Remote Desktop to work. And I use Remote Desktop all the time as a way to access my backup PC in my other room.

I'm afraid I have no other suggestions for you as I'm not familiar with those registry hacks. Sorry.

I had an after-thought. Naturally, if you have restore points, you can do a system restore to get the deleted registry entry back, you can restore a backup if you have one from before the registry entry was deleted, OR you can go to another computer running Windows 11 that DOES NOT and NEVER HAS used RDP, open regedit and export the HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client key. You can then place the .reg file on a flash drive, insert it in your troublesome machine, double click on the file which imports the key back in. You would then need to set up RDP again.

Why I say export from a machine that does not use RDP is because some of the values within that key are populated when one uses RDP so would apply only to that machine and would not be applicable to yours. If that machine has never used RDP it would be a virgin key.

I assume here you want to RDP INTO a windows box and not RDP FROM a windows box.

You absolutely DO NOT need a Ms account to RDP into Windows -- I often RDP to Windows systems from Linux boxes !!!!
All you need for RDP INTO Windows is to have Windows pro (not home on the box you are "RDP'ing into) , enable remote connections and have an account / password on the remote box.

Anything else is just a big load of Bovine Scatology.

Since he said he deleted the HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client registry key, I just assumed he was running Pro, but as he did it from the command line he may never have had it in the first place if he's running Home.
But then.....he would have to be running Pro to even have a start menu entry for Remote Desktop, wouldn't he?
(Any PC you copy the registry entry from will also have to be running Pro.)

I know better than to a-s-sume as it makes an A-S-S out of me. It's hard to admit I'm guilty of Bovine Scatology before I've even had my first cup of morning coffee.

If I got 1 EUR for everybody messing around with the registry and hosing up their computers when they shouldn't touch it or even be aware of its very existence I'd have more money than Bill Gates, Zuckermann, Bezos and Donald Trump all combined. !!!!!

Let me break this down – IF you normally log into a Windows 10/11 PC with a MICROSOFT ACCOUNT, when you go to log into that machine from a remote Windows PC using Microsoft’s Remote Desktop, the log in credentials will need to be the Microsoft Account credentials you use as the normal credentials for said PC.

I know this, because I use Remote Desktop from a "Window" PC. It's also explained in step #3 of Brink tutorial - Use Remote Desktop to Connect to Windows 11 PC Tutorial. I don't care what Linux does. Linux wasn't the question. We're talking about Windows. Additionally, the OP never mentioned the version of Windows they are running (and still hasn't) outside of "11".

Well damn!!I'm wrong again. With this friendly debate about RDP I sought to educate myself more on the subject. I've never really investigated into it much since every machine I have runs Pro and I was aware I could not remote in to a Home machine.. I had absolutely NO idea the app was on Home.
MS slapped me up the side of my head with this rude awakening: "While a Remote Desktop server (as in, the PC that you are connecting to) needs to be running a Pro edition of Windows, a client machine (the device you are connecting from) can be running any edition of Windows (Pro or Home), or even a different operating system altogether."

That said, I concede. However, I would prefer to be considered guilty of equine Scatology rather than bovine. Living in Texas, we have a lot of both. Cows go 'splat', horses go 'plop' which is a lot less yucky. Please let me be full of plop rather than splat.

The same is true if you log in with a local account. You need same account on both.

I have found W11 is temperamental and even if you have same account on both devices, it often comes up with "enter your credentials" screen but still refuses to connect even though you know you have entered correct details.

I have found you sometimes have to manually enter credentials using the Credential Manager. Never needed to do this with W10.

As far I can tell, Credentials Manager does not actually differentiate between MS account or local account - it is just a name and a password. Password cannot be a null password though for RDP.


I rather think @Jimbo misinterpreted your statement "With that I'll say if you log into Windows with a Microsoft account, you will need to use those credential to RDP to it" as meaning you NEED an MS account which when I read it, I can see how one could interpret it as meaning that, even though I am sure you did not mean that.

Equally, I think you may have slightly misinterpreted @Jimbo's intent of his reply when he said "You absolutely DO NOT need a Ms account to RDP into Windows (this is true BUT you do need same account (local or MS) on both devices which was not specifically stated by him).

However, @Jimbo could have been more subtle in his reply but bear in mind he is Skandinavian, and I know from years of working in Denmark, Norway and even a bit in Sweden that culturally, things are black or white and shades of grey do not exist, and they often come over as blunt, particularly when expressing in English (and my Skandinavian friends all agree that subtlety is not a Scandinavian trait LOL).

I will give an example. I was in a meeting with Brit's and Danes, and when meeting finished, I said to organiser of next back to back meeting "I am rather busy - am I needed at next meeting?"

The organiser said "No" and nothing else. The Brits all fell about laughing, and the Danes looked on puzzled at laughter. My reply was a bemused "I'll take that as a no then!".

We had to explain that the simple reply "No" meant I was insignificant and not needed at all regardless of any consideration of my input/skills etc. A British organiser would have subtly replied "No, I do not think so, but I will call you if we do need you". I would have then replied "Thanks - see you later (Tak - vi ses senere)"

Equally in Japan, I made the dreaded faux pas of putting a Japanese person's business card into my pocket without reading it, and asking even a benign question e.g. "how many people in your department" and that was tantamount to ignoring the person!

The problem with jimbo is he's the hit and run type - criticizes/ostracizes your posts then ignores any replies. It's one thing to ignore a person after a set of replies to avoid conflict; it's another to flat out ignore them while criticizing them. That's not culture that's rudeness.
