OS
Windows 11 RP
Trying to do an "in place upgrade" on one of my virtual machines.
Version on VMWare is Win 11 beta 22623.730.
I have a UUPDump ISO of 22623.1028.

I mount the ISO in the VM through file explorer, and run the setup.exe file.
It says "Installing Windows Server".
When I click continue, I am offered only a clean install, i.e. no option to keep files/apps (greyed out).

Stumped.

Edit:
I have upgraded this same VM from Win 10 using a 22623.730 ISO with no problem.
I'm also wondering why the ISO is detected as :Windows Server"

If you go to the Sources folder in the mouted ISO file there will be either install.wim or install.esd. Run
dism /get-wiminfo /wimfile:install.wim
or
dism /get-wiminfo /wimfile:install.esd

That will tell you which version of Windows are included in the install archive.

Are you trying to upgrade a Insider Beta version to a stabble version?
You can't unless you do a clean install, even on a VM.
This is why the version is erroneous, it can't make sense of it.

First off, what happens if you boot from the .ISO - does it offer upgrade, or only a new install?

Also, I recommend that you build a new .ISO - in looking at UUPDump, I don't see that build offered (anymore - at least it is not there now), see 22623 - Browse known builds

Unless you have a particular need for that exact build to be installed?

1. I haven't tried booting the VM from the ISO, just mounting it inside the VM. Will try booting it.
2. The build doesn't matter, as long as it's newer. Will try to create another UUPDump ISO with the latest build.

Thanks for the input.

re: Build not mattering: Normally, I'd agree, but sometimes builds have had issues, and a lot of times I've had issues with doing in-place upgrades, the builds also tend to disappear quickly because of said issues lol.

Since that has happened to me in the past, I suggested it as a possibility as to why it's not showing - precisely because it was reported that that particular .ISO refused to run correctly to update / upgrade systems. This is most likely not the case - but stranger things have happened.
