Windows 11 Home, version 22H2
Hello,
My recently purchased PC came with computer name; DESKTOP-K********
For simpicity, I recently changed it to just DESKTOP
I did not make a note of the old name, and cannot recall what the ******* were.
Now one of my programs insists I must enter the previous name before it will launch.

All web searches point me to looking at the Registry Editor, and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SchedulingAgent
where I can read the old name.
But the old name I see there is something like WIN-SVPD...... etc, i.e. nothing like the above name.
I have tried the name it gives, but the app does not recognise it.

So I am stuck. Any suggestions on how I can find the old name?
Thanks, Ken

Although I do not have a solution, thank you for the warning. My laptop name is Laptop-29I71F8 and I was thinking of changing it to just Laptop. Now I know there may be potential problems with doing that, so I won't.

Try looking for your old device name in your MS account.

This is odd. I have been changing the default name for years and years without any issues. What app is requiring you to enter the old name?

I have looked in my MS account.
It gives me the old name for my computer before I upgraded to windows 11 pro.
This name is NOT the same as that given in the Registry Editor, also does not look anything like I recall.
It also does not work.

The app that is objecting to the new name is AceMoneyLite v 4.37.0.0

I'd try contacting the vendor of that app. Perhaps they can tell you how to get the app to bypass that requirement. After all, people do rename their PCs.

Contacted AceMoney website.
They aske me to find the .amj data file.
When found, the old computer name was part of the file's pathname.

So problem solved. All seems to be OK now.
I have carefully noted the old name!

Thanks for your help. Ken.
