Win 11
Am in early stages of setting up a new Win 11 Pro (Ver 24H2) laptop for my wife. Trying to Map Network Drive which is an external HDD connected direct via USB to an Asus router. Am positive I'm using correct login. I get the error message shown in screenshot

Screenshot 2025-05-10 090246.webp
I have 2 other Win 11 machines on the network that access the shared drive just fine.

Both Network Discovery and File & Printer Sharing are enabled.

Please advise how I can resolve this?

Thank you so much

Ken

I can access my Router from a browser by using http://192.168.1.1/ and using the name and password established when setting up the Router. It gives me choices.

My router shares an attached HDD. The router only supports using the SMB1 protocol. I get that "...not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource." message too, until I enable the SMB/CIFS 1.0 Client in Windows Features.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Yes I restarted.

The UN/Password is correct. I have it saved in my password manager and copied/pasted it. Also tried direct typing it in several times. All those failed. Any other ideas?

Thanks, Ken

For anyone else attempting the regedit fix, please FIRST do the following regular list of fix items (but not limited to...):

  1. Verified that Password Protected Sharing is turned OFF (via Control Panel).
  2. Verify that Advanced Sharing Settings, Network Discovery are ON
  3. Verify that File and Printer Sharing settings, are ON.
  4. Reset network adapter settings, update and/or reinstall network driver.
  5. Check and adjust file and folder security permissions (my UNIX file server only has "nobody" and "EVERYONE" in the public shared folder(s) access list with all options checked). Your settings may vary.
  6. Clear stored credentials in the Credential Manager, thereafter in Services, turn Credentials Manager OFF.
  7. ...then, and only then, try the Registry Editor fix.

ASUS routers, like most home routers, don't support the SMB signing that is enabled by default in 24H2. Open an administrative PowerShell session, and enter

Powershell:
Set-SmbClientConfiguration -RequireSecuritySignature $false

Way I did it was turn on SMB1.

Run both these commands in PowerShell,

Set-SmbClientConfiguration -RequireSecuritySignature $false

Set-SmbClientConfiguration -EnableInsecureGuestLogons $true

Log in to router then these settings I used for USB application on left,

That’s interesting, my ASUS router has various click to activate USB HDD’s attached to it using Ai disk. I tried it, once….. once.
