Solved Can't disable checkboxes in file explorer on Asus ProArt P16

I want to remove the checkboxes in file explorer and can't figure out how to do it. I've unselected checkboxes under folder options / view but they are still there. Tried two different registry hacks - they persist.

Fj$#%#ing MS always making life miserable.

Does anyone know how I can make file explorer look just like it does on my non-touch machines?

Hello, :alien:

You can use this below to see if your laptop may be stuck in Tablet mode which will always use check boxes even when turned off.

Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe), and go to the key below:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell

Check to see if you may have a TabletMode or DeviceConvertible DWORD in the right pane of the key above. If you do, modify the DWORD value to 0 instead of 1.

In addition:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\PriorityControl

Check to see if you may have a ConvertibleSlateMode or SystemDockMode DWORD in the right pane of the key above. If you do, modify the DWORD value to 0 instead of 1.

Restart the computer to apply.

If you have your options set correctly in file explorer options>view tab and @Brinks suggestion does not work,
Test using another user account. If the issue is present in that account, the problem is corruption in WIndows.
If the issue is NOT in the new account, it would point to being a corruption issue with your account..

I'm able to remove the checkboxes in a test account. What next?

I used the Chris Titus tool after install.

GitHub - ChrisTitusTech/winutil: Chris Titus Tech's Windows Utility - Install Programs, Tweaks, Fixes, and Updates

(I'm sure you're familiar with it, adding link for others).

You can double check the options in that app to see if it has a check box setting enabled to turn off.

To add to what Brink said, I am assuming you created the new account as a LOCAL account: Correct?

First make darn sure the new account you created is set as an administrator and not a standard user. In settings>accounts
to the right of the new user name click down arrow. Select Change account type.
Click arrow to right of standard user and select Administrator.
You must at this point make a decision. It depends on this decision what you have to do to get your files from your old account into the new one.

Do you want to keep this a local account and store your files on your computer OR if your current account is a MS account synced to Onedrive, is it your intention to convert this new account back to your MS account and sync your files to onedrive again?

Let us know your choice and we can give you instructions on the proper way to handle this for whichever option you choose.
