Change default icon of file extension

Is there an "updated for 11" version of the following tutorial?

I've found this tiny (1 MB!) program excellent. I've changed several of the icons for file types, because I disliked the icons of the associated programs. Just works. No install required.

Hey.

I use three programs :
1) Default program editor
2) File Types
3) Filetypesman
What i should tell you from my experience :
1) File types changes looks not very stable.
2) Filetypes hasnt the best user interface and sometimes changes not work.
3) Default program editor looks good. Aldo it has the ability to backup and restore your work/settings.
The path of backups is C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\factormystic.net\Default Programs Editor\2.7.2676.2142\backups ,
so you can transfer it even at other systems.

Critical : When i backed up with Default program editor never i had problem.
But one time that i did Restore from backup the system crashes. I cant boot and i restored from image backup.

Advice : while all these settings are in registry , always create a fresh restore point and an image backup before the changes.
Especially with Default Programs Editor. With the 2 other i never had a completely crash.

@Sqrly: Types and Nirsoft's File Types Mgr are both older than Default Progs Editor, so if you're going to try all three, you might want to start with Default, and if that works for you, you won't have to go any farther. I would agree with @Bug locker: Make a new Restore Point or an image of your main drive JIC. But I've never had a problem with the changes that Default makes.

Just to define when my system crashes with Default Program Editor :
It crashes only when i tried to restore a backup of its :

Thanks for that additional information. I have never needed to restore a backup that Default Progs Ed has made, so I didn't know there might be a problem. I think if I needed to restore the registry, I wouldn't use the Default Progs Ed Restore function. I'd use Windows System Restore.

Lol. Now you know that. So Before you try a restore with DPE :

1) Ensure you have a fresh restore point
2) Ensure you have a fresh image backup
3) Ensure that you had close the lights and windows at home
4) Ensure that your passport isnt expired
5) Ensure that you have food and water at home for at least 30 days
6) Ensure that your mobile phone has full battery.

Thank you kindly for that excellent advice. I will be sure to follow it the next time I try a restore from within DPE.
