Browsers and Mail Change Default Search Engine used by Address Bar in Microsoft Edge

This tutorial will show you how to change the default search engine used by the address bar in Microsoft Edge for your account in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

The Microsoft Edge web browser is based on Chromium and was released on January 15, 2020. It is compatible with all supported versions of Windows, and macOS. With speed, performance, best in class compatibility for websites and extensions, and built-in privacy and security features.

Keeping Bing as your default search engine provides an enhanced search experience in Microsoft Edge, including direct links to Windows apps, relevant suggestions from your organization if you’re signed in with a work or school account, and instant answers to questions about Windows. However, you can change the default search engine to any site that uses OpenSearch technology.

Here's How:

1 Open Microsoft Edge.

2 Click/tap on the Settings and more (3 dots) button, and click/tap on Appearance. (see screenshot below)


3 Click/tap on Privacy, search, and services in the left pane, and click/tap on Address bar and search under "Services" in the right pane. (see screenshot below)

If you do not see a left pane, then either click/tap on the 3 bars menu button towards the top left OR widen the horizontal borders of the Microsoft Edge window until you do.

4 Select the search engine you want to use by default in the Search engine used in the address bar drop menu. (see screenshot below)

You can also click/tap on Manage search engines above to select a default search engine like below. The search engine in bold is the current default.

1) Click/tap on the More actions (3 dots) button on the search engine you want.
2) Click/tap on Make default.

To add a different search engine, perform a search in the address bar using that search engine (or a website that supports search, like a wiki site). The engine or website you used to search will now appear in the list of options you can select.
