Backup and Restore Change System Restore Point Creation Frequency in Windows 11

System_Restore_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to increase or decrease the system restore point creation frequency to what you want in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Turning on system protection for a drive allows System Restore to include the drive when restore points are created so you can undo undesired system changes by reverting to a previous point in time.

System Restore monitors system changes and saves the system state as a restore point. If a system problem develops as a result of a system change, the user can return the system to a previous state using the data from a restore point.

Restore points are created to let users select a previous system state. Each restore point contains the required information to restore the system to the selected state. Restore points are created before key changes are made to the system.

Use System Restore to make restore points when you install a new app, driver, or Windows update, and when you create a restore point manually. System Restore does not restore user data or documents, so it will not cause users to lose their files, e-mail, browsing history, or favorites. Restoring will remove apps, drivers, and updates installed after the restore point was made.

If an app, command, or schedule calls to create a restore point in Windows 11, system restore will only create the restore point if no other restore point has already been created within the past 24 hours (1440 minutes) by default. Users can always manually create a restore point at any time from within the System Restore user interface though.

You can change the system restore point creation frequency to how many minutes you want instead of the default 1440 minute for System Restore to skip creating a new restore point if any restore points were created within the previous set minutes. Setting 0 minutes for unlimited will have System Restore never skip creating a new restore point.

You must be signed in as an administrator to change the system restore point creation frequency.

OPTION ONE

Change System Restore Point Creation Frequency using Command

1 Open Windows Terminal (Admin), and select either Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt.

2 Copy and paste the command below you want to use into Windows Terminal (Admin), and press Enter. (see screenshots below)

(Unlimited - 0 minutes System Restore Point Creation Frequency to never skip creating a restore point)
REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore" /V "SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency" /T REG_DWORD /D 0 /F

OR

(Default - 1440 minutes (24 hours) System Restore Point Creation Frequency)
REG DELETE "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore" /V "SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency" /F

3 You can now close Windows Terminal (Admin) if you like.

0_SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency.png

Default_1440_SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency.png

OPTION TWO

Change System Restore Point Creation Frequency using REG file

1 Click/tap on the Download button below you want to use to download the file below.

Unlimited_0-minutes_SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency.reg

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore]
"SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency"=dword:00000000

OR

Default_1440-minutes_SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency.reg

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore]
"SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency"=-

2 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

3 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

4 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

5 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

OPTION THREE

Change System Restore Point Creation Frequency in Registry Editor

1 Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe).

2 Navigate to the key below in the left pane of Registry Editor. (see screenshot below)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore

SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency_regedit-1.png

3 In the right pane of the SystemRestore key, double click/tap on the SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency DWORD to modify it. (see screenshot above)

The SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency DWORD is not available by default.

If you do not have the SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency DWORD, then right click on an empty space in the right pane of the SystemRestore key, click/tap on New, click/tap on DWORD (32-bit) Value, type SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency for the name, and press Enter.

4 Click/tap on Decimal, type in a number for how many minutes you want for the system restore point creation frequency, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

The default is 1440 minutes (24 hours), or delete the SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency DWORD.

Entering 0 for unlimited will have System Restore never skip creating a restore point.

SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency_regedit-2.png

5 You can now close Registry Editor if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

Thanks for that. I understand frequency = every 24 hours to be a new point is created daily but in that context I do not understand 0 = unlimited. Could you explain what that means, please?

Hello, :-)

Sure.

By default, System Restore will only automatically create a restore point if no other restore point has already been created within the past 24 hours (1440 minutes) by default.

Setting 0 minutes for unlimited will have System Restore never skip creating a new restore point. Basically setting 0 is for no restrictions.

Hello Cabus, and welcome. :alien:

Both command are used to create a restore point.

The first one just includes to specify the type of restore point as "System" like in option two below.

It's for creating a restore point of the Windows "C" drive.

It's basically to be able to use System Restore to select a restore point to go back to and restore system files to how they were at the time the restore point was created.

Forgive my ignorance, I have never once in my computing years looked at system restore points & I’ve not ever used a restore point.

Can windows restore points be setup to automatically save to a secondary drive? Or do I have to save these restore points manually?

    …still on a horse.
System Restore has been around for so many years now, and it's been cussed and discussed so many times on so many forums, that I'm appalled at the number of people who are still Uninformed (ignorant) about it. Or even worse, know about it but refuse to use it.

System Restore is so important to me, that I use a script in my Startup Folder, to force a new restore point to be created every time I boot up my PC. @Brink
At least once a month, I find it handy to be able to use the System Restore function, to go back a day or two, to get rid of some little problem.
For the really big things, I use "Ghost Restore". System Restore affects only System related files and has no effect on Data Files.

As a working PC tech, in my own Computer business, I've taken service calls where I knew that once I got on site, I could just to a System Restore and fix the problem. Then I'd get on site and find that some $^*% *^)$ had turned System Restore OFF. Then a quickie repair could wind up taking hours.

Thanks for the information about System Restore.

Hey mate, :alien:

Agreed. System Restore and restore points sure can help save your bacon from something recent.

I'd always recommend to also keep an updated system image for those issues System Restore may not be able to help undo.

All I see is "0" and nothing denoting how to change the interval for creation. There are two entries (RPSessionInterval = 1; SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency = 0) in the registry, what do I enter to set the system restore point to be created ever 30 days?

Hello mate, :alien:

"SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency" is for how many minutes you want instead of the default 1440 minutes (24 hours) for System Restore to skip creating a new restore point if any restore points were created within the previous set minutes.

You would need to create a task schedule like below instead to create a restore point every 30 days.

Hi Brink,

The 30 days was just a random number, what I want is to disable completely any system automatic restore points because I had it delete one that I had created and it wasn't because the dedicated storage area was too small. What about "RPSessionInterval" setting?

Not sure that's possible other than to disable System Protection. The system will almost always automatically create a restore point for such actions like Windows Update.

"RPSessionInterval" is for turning on/off System Restore like in option three below.

I suppose you could increase the storage area for restore points if available to help.

I set this to "0" and System Restore is still enabled for Users. How about if I set SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency to ffffffff?

"SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency" is the amount of time in minutes an automatic restore point will not be created if one was already created within that time. You can test with a longer time, but it will not 100% stop automatic restore points.

Setting "RPSessionInterval" to "0" will turn off system protection for drives.
