Personalization Change Taskbar Location on Screen in Windows 11

  • Staff
Taskbar_banner.png

This will no longer work starting with Windows 11 build 22598.

The taskbar functionality has changed in Windows 11. Alignment to the left or center at the bottom of the screen is the only location allowed now.

However, you can actually still change the taskbar location to the top or bottom on the screen for now.

You can't change the taskbar location to the left (00) or right (02) on the screen anymore without breaking the taskbar until moved back to the top or bottom.

This tutorial will show you how to change the taskbar location on screen to the top or bottom for your account in Windows 11.

When the taskbar is moved to the top, you will no longer see thumbnail previews for taskbar icons.

EXAMPLE: Taskbar location at top and bottom on screen in Windows 11

Taskbar_at_bottom_in_Windows_11-min.jpg
Taskbar_at_top_in_Windows_11-min.jpg

Here's How:

1 Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe).

2 Do step 3 (main taskbar) or step 4 (other taskbars) depending on if you have multiple displays or not.

3 To Change Main Taskbar Location on Screen

You would use this step if you only have one display, or have multiple displays and want to change the location of only the main taskbar.

A) Navigate to the key below in the left pane of Registry Editor. (see screenshot below)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StuckRects3

taskbar_location_on_main_display_regedit-1-min.png

B) In the right pane of the StruckRects3 key, double click/tap on the Settings binary value to modify it. (see screenshot above)

C) Place the cursor to the left of the value highlighted in yellow in the 0008 row and FE column below and click/tap on the Del key, type either 01 (top) or 03 (bottom - default) to change the taskbar location on screen for what you want, click/tap on OK, and go to step 5 below. (see screenshot below)

taskbar_location_on_main_display_regedit-2-min.png

4 To Change Other Taskbars Location on Screen

If you have multiple displays, then you can use this step to change the location of taskbars other than the main taskbar.

A) Navigate to the key below in the left pane of Registry Editor. (see screenshot below)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MMStuckRects3

MMtaskbar_location_on_main_display_regedit-1-min.png

B) In the right pane of the StruckRects3 key, double click/tap on the binary value of the taskbar location you want to modify it. (see screenshot above)

Each UID binary value represents a taskbar on each display you have connected.

Unfortunately, you will not know which taskbar the UID belongs to until after changing the location below. You will be able to easily change it back to what it was before if it is for the wrong taskbar.

Modifying the value below for the main taskbar in this step will have no affect. You will need to use step 3 above instead.

MMtaskbar_location_on_main_display_regedit-2-min.png

5 Restart the explorer process to apply.

7 When finished, you can close Registry Editor if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

Thx but it's not an official solution? :/
No, not an official solution, it's a third party app. But if it works for you, it's good.

I don't use it but I don't discourage it either.

Two current solutions I'm aware of now (both in beta):

I'd blindly guess that sometime within the next year, MS will do it itself.

Correction: The latter of those two, since it doesn't offer a replacement for the taskbar but just an augmentation, like Windows 11 itself does not currently support a vertical taskbar.

Hello! When I put the taskbar on the upper side it doesn't show the running apps in preview mode (miniatures). Is there a way to fix it?

When the app is running, there is a little "underline" beneath the icon.

Yes, look early in the thread. There is one, but it doesn't really work, so StartAllBack is it (or some Github solutions now).

Yes, it works. I have my taskbar on top of both my desktop and laptop.

@Wynona: And to the right/left is what I was referring to not working with the reg (explaining why it's not documented in the above article). Of course top isn't a problem.

@infinity: Do you mean you tried StartAllBack and that patcher independently? I don't think you want to use them concurrently. StartAllBack allows any position (haven't tried the patcher). Note that if you're on a dev build, it's purely YMMV, but I assume you're not.

I have looked through the configuration many times but can't seem to find an option to put my taskbar on the right using StartAllBack. Where can I find it?

You mean Microsoft not supporting it anymore (the only issue I'm aware of)? No. When/if that happens, it will be documented in the Insider Dev blog and probably soon after added to this article.

If you mean what you quoted, that isn't an issue: we were just expecting to find it as an explicit option in the area Infinity showed above rather than simply dragging it over.

So far, Explorer Patcher works for moving the taskbar anywhere you want it. . . Top, bottom, right, left. Plus I can even have my old Quick Launch Bar!

Although I'm pretty sure MS will probably block that one pretty soon.
