Checking And Repairing?

Hi all,

When I boot my system I get a notification that one of my disks is being checked and repaired. How do I get rid of this?

Are you allowing it to complete the disk check? If not let it do its thing.

Yeah, but it happens every time I boot up. I am aware of chkdsk, but don't know how to use it. It's the E drive if that is any use. Can I use chkdsk to run a scan before Windows boots, to fix this thing?

You could try the following:

Open a command window (CMD) paste this command and press Enter:

chkdsk e: /f /r

Wait for that command to complete, then paste the following command and press enter. Do so 2 or 3 times.

chkntfs /x e:

Then run this command and press Enter:

fsutil dirty query e:

Post the results

Thanks @antspants. How long do you think this would take on a 4TB mechanical drive?

The only time involved should be the chkdsk. You could try skipping that part if you wanted to.

Short answer is I am not sure, swerd. How important is this inconvenience to you?
Do it all when you have more time?

Others will have suggestions also

I would just prefer not to leave it on overnight. Would you say if I started in the morning it would be finished by the late evening?

I’d honestly be surprised if it took that long

Skip the chkdsk if you've already fully let it run before posting here:

just run this

fsutil dirty query e:

Hopefully it should say not dirty

Then run this 2 or 3 times.

chkntfs /x e:

All should be instant.

Reboot, see if it checks the drive again?

My notes could be outdated but not detrimental.

These are safe commands. The chkdsk you already know
The chkntfs /x e: command is to try and get chkdsk to stop running at windows start

If you’re going to wait till you have more time, do all of the above.

However this example has it all run in a different order

These are cmd commands. I don't really use powershell. I have no idea if they are the same and if not what the equivalents are

They're the same, it doesn't matter, chkdsk is just an .exe file which you pass command-line arguments to.

Maybe it is a software, windows issue
Check registry key if it is normal
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
On right window, double click BootExecute
If it looks like this autocheck autochk * then it is normal
Check very closely for any extra asterisk or apostrophe

Do you dual boot with Linux? If so, that is a common effect, particularly if you have hibernation or Fast Startup turned on in Windows.
