Windows 11 Pro
I just built a new system and upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 11 22H2 Pro. I tweak a lot and modify the registry carefully.

I found a whole lot of keys that are totally in or partially in Chinese characters. Some of the values are in Chinese, too.

Do I need to do a deep dive and delete everything before WW III, or is this just a friendly low key takeover of our capitalist society?

I have no clue and would really like to know if others find this as well and what should I worry about.

Click on them to see what they point to.
Most of mine are common auto_file entries generated by software originating from the far east.
Probably poor text encoding, I don't worry about it.

You could right click the entries to Rename then right click again to Copy, then paste that into Google Translate, but, it'll probably result in more gibberish, or something that doesn't make sense!

Thanks. It's nice to see a reason for it and that others are seeing it, too. Yes, the data are mostly generalized auto fill. I'd prefer to live with something then delete it from the registry and find my new system crashing.

Probably TikTok's doing. After all - it can take over the Wi-Fi, if you're in a Plane and set your mobile to Plane mode - it can take over the Plane.... And now it integrated itself into Windows too - installing Chinese propaganda. Who knows where else it installed its stuff. I'd check the TV too - same goes for the other electronic devices.... pretty sure there's some Chinese characters somewhere in there. To make things worst - some devices are even labeled "Made in China...." So, hey take it all out and set it on fire. Just to be safe...🫣

Probably translation from an app you installed, tho - it can also be a text encoding bug. Easiest way to find out "copy the names of those files" and do a google search or even google translate. That may reveal the source (which app they belong to).

PS.While installing Windows - you also get optional language packs - but that's probably not it (since that looks like Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT).

That sounds pretty cool, Do you happen to know the commands that that I would need in a bash terminal on my Android phone to cause the plane I am traveling in to make it dive from 60,000 feet to around 100 feet.

No need to panic. This is a recurring Windows quirk.

Windows has a known bug where legitimate apps can write registry entries, and Windows displays them using the wrong UTF-16 byte notation. Instead of showing one character at time, it groups every two characters into UTF-16 -- which renders as Chinese text. If you copied the actual text and dumped into a hex editor, it would appear normal.

It's been this way for a long time. MS knows the bug exists, but they can't fix it because fixing would cause a different bug.

The Airplane part was a satire inspired by a stupid question (that part is real tho) - from the recent TikTok CEO vs US congressional hearing - where one of the congressman seems to be an IT illiterate:

I bet it's the also the reason I have to have my TV connected to the internet. If not connected the HDMI ports won't get a signal until I unplug and plug back in my TV.

Not to defend TikTok (I don't use it and doubt I ever will) but IMHO, The questions were worded wrong. Of course TikTok is going to access the Wi-Fi if setup to do so. If not, how would it access the internet?
