Chipset driver fails to install

I have an asus prime b560m-a. I clean installed windows 11 the Microsoft USB route. Using the Asus CD I tried to install the chipset driver however the pc just kept rebooting. Same with the Intel installer.

Agree with AndreTen. And those drivers on the disk are likely old. I never use drivers off a disk when I build or maintenance a system.

Windows will search for updated chipset drivers automatically. Go to Windows update and check for updates and let it install any it finds. Then in search box type optional updates. In search results above click view optional updates. Since this is a fresh install you will probably see some driver updates. Apply them.

What indication are you getting that the chipset drivers are not already installed?

Device manager shows pci device and smbus device not installed. Used chipset drivers from Asus. Same problem. No problem with dev build

Choose: Win 11 64 bit. Download the chipset driver.
Extract it to a folder. Open the folder and double click AsusSetup.exe to install.
If that doesn't do anything, then double click: Install.bat

If it still doesn't work, then something else is stopping it from installing.
Some Windows security setting? 3rd party antivirus?

Btw... "pci device and smbus device" are part of the chipset driver.

In keeping things simple (as there are a whole lot of what if's and maybe's) there's somewhat of a misunderstanding that Windows provides all drivers but that's not necessarily true. What Windows does is provide a base set of drivers to get a device minimally working. Without a base driver a GPU wouldn't output a video signal, and you wouldn't be able to see a Windows setup screen

Don't know what your experience level is but, check all the drivers at Asus' site for your specific board. If you're using the disk drivers, you're most likely using old drivers. I'd install all the newest drivers for your board from there. And I'm not aware there's a "smbus" driver so,....

Anyway, make sure you reboot when asked to. And even if not, do a reboot after any driver installs.

Sorry I'm not clear on your answer.

Are you running both Windows 10 and Windows 11 in a dual boot, where Windows 10 shows the issue, but Windows 11 doesn't show an issue in Device Manager?

Dual boot setup. Windows 11 and Windows 11 Dev. Chipset Driver won't install in win 11 but will install in win 11 Dev. As the hardware is the same for both OSes it leads me to believe the problem is with Windows 11.

Have you tried backing up the drivers from Win11 Dev and then restoring them into Win11. Doubledriver Backup and Restore is great for that. Its standalone so all you gotta do is unzip it and run dd.exe as administrator.

What you say is true...sometimes...but... The manufacturers submit a set of drivers to Microsoft who in turn put them into the windows update database. IF Asus has submitted its set of drivers for this mobo to MS, they should be available in windows update. Per Microsoft's document here it states

I know this to be true because recently Dell Support & Assist updated several of my drivers, the chipset being one of them. When I looked in optional updates, there sat the updated chipset driver waiting on me to install it. Windows update had found it before I ran Dell Support & Assist.

You are right, though, in that windows update is not the answer to finding a missing driver if the manufacturer has not sent the updated driver to MS.

First off, I build my own systems so that means I manage my own drivers. And most who build their own systems get their motherboard drivers from the MB vendor as Microsoft does NOT supply them.

Keenly aware of it. Nothing new there. At any rate I'm here to keep this simple as you can really deep dive into the whole who does what driver debate. At the end of the day, one should always get the drivers for their devices from their device vendor where possible.

Also remember Microsoft gets some drivers from the device vendors, not the other way around (from MS to vendor). That means the vendor's drivers are the most recent, not Microsoft's. There's a reason why many turned off Driver Updates in Windows, and why Microsoft now provides those through Windows Update as "optional"

Again, many believe Microsoft supplies all drivers for all devices and are shocked to find this not true when looking at Device Manager. Yes, there are always exceptions to the rule, but for the most part this is how it works.

Anyway, this is the simple version as one can deep dive into what is and isn't supplied, and who is and isn't responsible for them.
