Hello.
Today I clean installed Windows 11 ver 22000.132, and allmost everything went well. But "Settings" in Windows Terminal don't work. I want to change it to cmd for standard.
1629146618115.jpeg

But when I select settings, there is just opening a window asking me what app I want to open .json file with and then an icon for Windows Store
1629146739051.jpeg

I have tried to reset all standardapps in Windows Settings, but that does not help.

No update in WU.
Anybody knows how to solve this?

EDIT: I have now tried to put Edge in as default for .json, but that did not work. Edge opens the .json as a text-file?!?

Thanks. Now CMD is the default app in Windows Terminal.
But as I still can't see "settings" I'm thinking what else I might be missing? I don't see the idea of a "Windows Terminal" instead of just cmd.exe, so I'm sure there are some things that I don't understand about this.

So if anyone has an idea about getting this to work, I will be happy to receive any help :)

There's nothing about build 22000.132 that breaks Settings in Terminal, it's working for me.

So it seems your particular install is at fault. The usual fixes would seem appropriate:

SFC /ScanNow

DISM's RestoreHealth option

If those do not fix it, then an in-place repair upgrade....

Or, if you've nothing you need to keep, you could try the clean install again.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

#4 I know Windows Terminal can work in 22000.132. It worked just fine in my old install - which was update on update from windows 10 to Windows 11, and after that from version to version, but NordVPN did not work after update to 22000.132, and therefore I did a clean install. Now NordVPN is working, but not "setting" in Windows Terminal. I have now tried all 3 solutions from you. But without succes.

And this is after the 3. option you wrote (in-place repair upgrade):

test 3.png

Thank you for your ideas, but it does still not work after my clean install. :tears:

Thank you for the idea #6, but that did not help either. To me it seems like the program/service to take care of the settings.json file is not running, and therefore Edge just shows it as a txt-file?

If you want, you can repair or reset the Terminal from Settings --> Apps --> Apps and Features --> Windows Terminal --> Advanced options.

You can also uninstall and reinstall Windows Terminal from Microsoft Store.

That did not help either #8. I have now tried to clean-install windows 11 Pro ver 22000.132 again. And at the very first login after Install finished I tried to open Windows Terminal -> settings, and this was the result:
newinstalled-windows 11.jpg

Maybe there is a fault in my install USB-pen? Or maybe something in my PC is doing this?

I have made my install USB-pen after this guide: Create Windows 11 Bootable USB Installation Media
I downloaded the ISO here: Summary for Windows 11 Insider Preview 10.0.22000.132 (co_release) amd64, Danish, Windows Pro

Then I boot the USB-pen, and when Installation is to begin, I delete every logical drive on my NVMe, so Windows itself can make its small drives.

Has I done something wrong???

Terminal and Terminal Preview are both updated by the Windows Store.

However, I've had issues with the Store since clean installing 22000.132 on my system also. For whatever reason, it was the old style store, and I'm still getting Snip & Sketch instead of the new Snipping tool. So, chalk it up to some idiosyncrasies between the clean install versus the upgrade.

I'm *almost* tempted to restore my Windows 01 backup and take the upgrade again because of the slew of things that clean installing seems to have broken that were not broken via upgrade.

Almost.

I've read here on this forum that until you sign in...ie not a local account...you won't get updates. I think that meant Store updates. When I installed W11...there was an option to sign in with just MS apps or everything. If Terminal gets updated by the Store, maybe yours isn't broken...just not updated.

More than that, because I always use a Microsoft account since Windows 10.

On a clean install, you also have to re-join the Insiders program, as @Kari reminded me.

After doing and and rebooting, there were a ton of updates in the Store. lol.

I didn't see any for either Terminals or Terminals preview, but I am already on the latest version, so no surprise there.

Okay, I did not know, that I had to check Windows Store for opdates! I thought Windows Update did that also?!?! Is it possible to have that checked automatic like windows update?

EDIT: Yes, 25 updates in Microsoft Store (incl Windows Store itself!)

Windows Store runs in the background and usually will update apps on its own, unless you've disallowed it from running in the background.

See Settings --> Apps --> Apps & features --> Microsoft Store, then click the vertical 3 dots to select Advanced options. Look for the section titled Background apps permission and if it is set to either Power optimized (recommended) or Always, you're fine. If it is set to Never. then it will not check for app updates in the background on its own, and you'll need to do so manually, or change the setting to one of the other two values to allow for automatic updates for Store-installed apps.

Thank you! Microsoft Store however had (and still has) the setting Power optimized (recommended), but it did not update the 25 apps found manually. But maybe that is because this installation is only 4 days old.

Indeed, I've never actually researched the time period.

I do know that I've seen updates that have installed without me initiating an update check in the Store, but I also leave my computers running 24 /7 - so it may be that it only does it at certain times / when there is no usage.

Anyone who uses their computers and then turns it off, without leaving it on for significant periods of time without using it, may have to rely on manual checks, assuming it is either based upon idle time and / or a particular time duration.

I installed W11 again last evening from Win update. It took a long time but did so without any errors in Reliability history. The audio errors that I was receiving before occurred with startup/shutdown are still there (windows audio device graph isolation). Upon starting this machine this am, they didn't occur. I've turned the microphone off as I don't use it. Hopefully it gets corrected in later updates.

Terminal.... I found this website👉 Releases · microsoft/terminal

I d/l'd the latest version (in pre-release- ver 1.10.1933.0 and it installed OK on this machine). It works OK. That page explains how Terminal isn't uploaded by the store with this release. That was on 7/14, so maybe that has changed since. Food for thought.

EDIT- "that page explains how Terminal isn't uploaded..." is under version 1.9.1942.0 and NOT version 1.10.1933.0
