Getting all my apps re-installed after a clean install on Wednesday, I can't install WinZip. Makes no difference if I use the offline installer or the online downloader.

It sounds like you have WinZip, open in WinZip.
I'm NOT joking.

Or... something is scanning it.

Check Task Manager.
I've had similar thing happen with 7zip.

For example... 7zip comes in a 7zip file. I open the file drag the 7zip installer to my desktop, and try to install.
I get the error warning like you got.
Then I notice that the original 7zip file is open still.

See if you can open the security panel without any problems i.e without the popup "You need another app to open ...." etc. If you get that message your Windows system hasn't installed 100% correctly. Otherwise no probs with Winzip or 7Zip. I prefer 7Zip myself but that's users choice.

Cheers

I know what you're saying. But I can't describe it any better.
Last time it happened to me was a while ago.

It has to be either a scanning program or a zip program, that has locked it up.
Windows 10 and 11 have a built in Zip program, too.

You could check with Emco Unlockit

Not an error then

@BrianInEngland

Not sure why -- try downloading from a different source, use a different browser to download etc. Sometimes for instance Firefox will block what it thinks is uncommon software even if you know its OK. Other browsers might have similar restrictions hidden away in their security settings.

Might want to just try 7zip. It does .zip files as well.

Might want to just try 7zip. It does .zip files as well.
Does it do .tar files? That's the only thing I need WinZip for

Yep. See pic above.

It also works fine in Windows 11. They just haven't updated their website yet. :)

Here's what the Explorer Integration looks like...

If you need to "create" a .tar file, you just choose the "Add to archive..." option, to open the 7zip window in post #12.

As for your original question. Emco Unlockit will show you what's locking.... anything.
I installed 7-Zip, I can open .tar folders (mainly music purchases from Qobuz). Thanks for the help.

7-Zip is a very small program (5MB), WinZip has lots of non-removeable 'bloat' in it's latest version and is several hundred MB.

I know. I switched to 7zip long ago, for that reason among others.
It can "create" 7-8 different types of archive. It can "open" about 40 archive types.

Here's a pic of Emco Unlockit, when you right click a file and choose "Check"...

Image1.png

I picked shell32.dll because I knew it would be seriously... locked.
And IF you were insane, and wanted to delete it... all you would need to do is click the large open lock icon at top left-ish,
to unlock that file.
EMCO Unlockit is also a tiny program that can integrate with Explorer.

I use the "Restore Classic Context Menus" tweak on Win 11 so I can see all the right click context menu choices.

I paid for WinZip! But yeah 7-zip seems to be the answer, I only need it for .tar files. Windows doesn't support them.

So if I run the WInZip isntaller and get the error, then open Emco it'll show me what's going on? I installed dozens of apps the other day, none of them failed until now
