Hi forum,

Does anyone have this problem? Right click on a file and select "Compress to ZIP File" does not work, but third-party app (7Zip) works (video below)!

Probably just another example of a buggy MS Windows add-on. Would vary from computer to computer.

Stick with the (frequently more reliable) 3rd party software.

(LOL Talk about poking the purist bear .... 😈 )

There might be because of limited privileges. Maybe you have no standard user access to the specific folder, it needs Administrator rights to access, so it fails when trying to create the compressed file. 7-zip, WinRAR and other utilities can be configured to always have Administrator rights, so they won't fail. Or some system files are corrupt. Run sfc /scannow and restart.

I didn't intend to suggest using the Windows zip compression, just stating that I had no issue using it. I have found it sufficient for my simple needs after using and testing other 3rd party apps. That's just my personal experience.

I also like that it comes up and asks you to pay after you 30 days, yet just allows you to keep on using for free if you close the box xD.
Yeah winrar in my book is better than 7ZIP . Not to say it doesn't have its uses and that it doesn't work. It absolutely does and is a very good alternative, as is Winrar an excellent alternative to 7ZIP.

I am (somehow) 7z app semi-pro user, IMO it is best compressor (!) app and one of the best "File Manager" too (despite its Win 95 style icons). Only have problem with new Win 11 context menu, I have to press "Shift+F10" or "Menu" key on keyboard to access 7z options. I have said that to Igor (7z author) and he said he has not switched to Win 11 yet, maybe in future he would consider this option to be added in 7z. He needs more help about how adding new option to Win 11 menu. 7z community are upvoting my request to encourage Igor (!) to speed up this process!

NanaZip is one of the newest 7Zip fork (Chinese author and in beta state) which supports Win 11 new context menu but I noticed many buggy things in it, I uninstalled it after one week.

I like Win 11 new context menu ("simple file management operators row!", copy, paste, rename icons), I changed it to classic one (Win 10 context menu style) but I like to get used to it and now I am working with new one (new Win 11 context menu).

Hello mate, :-)

It looks like the ZIP file association may have been broken. Normally, the default app for ZIP is File Explorer (explorer.exe).

You can try downloading the REG file for ZIP in the table of option 2 below to see if it may sort this for you.

Hello LORD @Brink, :alien:

As always the best solution, but it didn't work. :D
I had tried it before (just un-associate "Zip" file extension in 7z but didn't apply the "Reg" key).

Run 7z as admin and un-associate "Zip" extension from 7z options. Apply your "Reg" key, reboot... but nothing :sleep:

Hi there
@atinfo

7-zip on the context menu still works on W11 though you have to go to the next screen --> "show more options" --pity it's not on the ist screen but it's liveable with.

Hi there
@atinfo

7-zip on the context menu still works on W11 though you have to go to the next screen --> "show more options" --pity it's not on the ist screen but it's liveable with.

Thanks. I have mentioned it before (above). I have to press "Shift+F10" or "Menu" key on keyboard to access 7z options, or as you mentioned by click on "Show more options" (I hate that), we have to click one more time (right click, search for "Show more options" when you right click!, left click again, left click again!).
I am keyboard guy, not clicky, I prefer keyboard shortcut instead of that ridicules "Show more options").

In that case, you can try the REG file below to see if it may help. It will completely gut and reset ZIP file association for you. You will need to be signed in as an administrator for this REG file.

Code:

@Brink Didn't work … :woozy: (It can open "Zip" file with "Explorer" but can't compress a file).

As a test, does it ZIP if you use Show more options > Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder?

Yes, it does. I have this option hidden (I have hide "Compressed (zipped) folder" and other options except "Desktop", because I don't use them and it is minimalistic, just "Desktop" there). Could it be root of the problem?!
