Windows 11 Version: 23H2 OS Build 22631.3235
Well new issue… I updated both PCs to KB5041587 (recent update geared towards AMD users) and the update seemed to mess up one of them. When ever I put the computer to sleep it shuts off.

I uninstalled the update (KB5041587) and every time I try to open start menu it says something is corrupted and it tells me to sign out every time… I right click taskbar and click taskbar settings to bypass this issue.

I then reinstalled the KB5041587 update and issue still happens…

This may not help, but I suggest running

sfc /scannow

from a command line window with admin privileges. (it's the Windows system file checker.) It may fix corrupted system fles.

If it finds issues that it can't repair, use the dism tool to repair the Windows image. (The link is for Windows 10, but it's exactly the same under 11.)

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

The run sfc /scannow again.

Good luck.

Just FYI. This update is a “Preview” update. You don’t really need it. The actual update should come next patch Tuesday 9th Sept. The bug fixes in this update will be in the main update at that time.

An update preview has bugfix/support fixes that are in the main release. The main release (patch Tuesday) also has them, but also includes the security fixes/components. Preview doesn't have any security fixes at all (to prevent bad actors from knowing what's fixed/what is potentially exploitable)

Just uninstall it.

Yeah did all that, also did in-place upgrade and got a BSOD blue screen, but the PC still shuts off when putting it into sleep.

When I uninstall the update it will keep saying "Critical Error: Your Start menu isn't working. We'll try to fix it the next time you sign in."
For some reason on this computer I had Windows Configuration Update (KB5041587) in Other Updates and 2024-08 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5041587) in Quality Updates. Other PC didn't have the Windows Configuration Update.

I sign out and it keeps doing this error.

Update: Did a new install of windows 11 and tested sleep mode. The computer still shuts down after doing a new install.

Now, I am getting error/retry error (0x8007000B) every time I try to install the KB5041587 update. I tested sleep mode before trying to install KB5041587 update.

I ran OCCT app and ran some power tests and it found 0 errors.

So, if this is not an update issue what could it be? The PC was working fine few weeks ago..

I ran “powercfg -energy” in cmd and few errors and warnings came up but this one about PCiE got disabled?? PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) disabled PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) has been disabled due to a known incompatibility with the computer hardware.

Could this be the issue? A motherboard issue? I know the hardware is compatible because I have two systems with the same equipment, weird…

The obvious question: have you run the diagnostic in the second machine?

Different results?

Yes, on the working machine "powercfg -energy" does nothing. Also, no report is generated. Why? (Screenshot below)

1725407416599.png

While on the other machine, running "powercfg -energy" give some error reports, don't know what the issue really is because I have two old laptops that have "PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) disabled PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) has been disabled due to a known incompatibility with the computer hardware" and they do sleep mode just fine. The other cautionary/warning errors were about PCi Express something like this error "USB suspend: USB device not entering selective suspend. Device ID: USB\VID_1038&PID_113A"

I'm just going to RMA the motherboard and see if its a motherboard issue.

I’d urge you to fully exhaust all options first. The planet is littered enough without more digital devices and hardware poisoning it. Some companies will pass it on as refurbished, some just bin them.

When I worked for Kodak, they had giant skip bins full of cameras set to be compacted, some of which had a scratch you could barely see if you could see at all.
Some companies simply find it more cost effective to bin as apposed to diagnose and repair. Regardless of what it says in their mission statements etc.

But if you think it’s the board, then fair call.

What more options do I have/can do? lol, I reinstalled Windows 11 and issue is still there. The PC was working fine after a windows update, it did say to enable "get the latest update as soon as possible" because it said I was missing important updates or something to that nature. So, I enabled that and then it updated the system, and the sleep problem came and so I did a reinstall of W11 and no solution. Even switched the PCs around to see if there was any USB problems, still nothing solved.

It has to be the motherboard or GPU, I'm leaning more towards the motherboard.

Also, a while back I did reset TPM. I reset TPM again, and it sleeps with memory integrity on for now. I can say everything is back to normal I suppose.

Sorry, I can't follow the events of this thread at all. I am trying to relate it with your other issues. Did you not say back in July that you got a new CPU? If so, did you clear CMOS after the new CPU was installed so the bios could set the new hardware configuration? With the new CPU you should have started the system in its default configuration. Reset bios to default. Will it run in this state?

Yes, that issue was with the first PC. This current thread is for the 2nd PC. I also updated BIOS to latest non beta version. The PC seems fine after resetting TPM and it no longer shuts down after putting it into sleep mode.

Update, looks like the issue came back. PC randomly turned off while I was downstairs. Put it into sleep mode and it turns off again. I'm going to continue with the motherboard RMA.

I'm having the same problems after installing the latest Windows 11 update. My computer would often shut down unexpectedly when I entered sleep mode. I checked the event logs and decided to uninstall the update, but my start menu and other Windows 11 features are no longer working. I've already attempted to repair the system using the following commands without success.

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
sfc /scannow

I really hope Microsoft will address this issue soon, or that the community can find a temporary workaround

Yeah, the only way to make the Start menu and those Windows 11 features work is to install the update again.

Thank you, re-installing the update fixed the start menu but the computer still turns off every time when putting it to sleep. Has anyone else experienced this after installing this update?

I had to get a whole new motherboard, issues have been fixed.
