Is it possible to disable mouse buttons 3 & 4 without affecting the keyboard's forward and back buttons?
I frequently accidentally hit the mouse's top right button. So, I'd like to disable it.
I like to use the keyboard's back button. So, I'd like to preserve its functionality.
Is it possible to do both?
Microsoft Keyboard Control does not show a separate place to control mouse buttons.
Kensington TrackballWorks causes insertion point problems when using MS Word.
X-Mouse caused other problems.
Thanks!

I use x-mouse and have not had any issues with it. What problems did it cause for you?

It sent a "back" command to a particular program when I would click on its window, thus activating it and doing a back at the same time.

Have you tried disabling the button using the disable function in X-mouse? I tried it on mine and it does disable that button.

Yes. Disabling from X-Mouse caused the strange issues I just described. When switching active windows between Word and Sentient Trader, Sentient Trader became active and went back a screen.

I tested for you using a Logitech M510 by disabling buttons 4 and 5 but my daily user is a Logitech M325 which doesn't have the side buttons. On it, I use XMBC to program the 'tilt wheel left' to BACK and 'tilt wheel right' to CLOSE. To make that work, even though this mouse has no buttons 4 and 5 I still had to program them before the tilt wheel functions worked. When I disable buttons 4 & 5 using either mouse, the tilt functions no longer work nor does the side buttons on the M510. Here's a screenshotxmbc.pngshot.

How did your mouse command changes affect the back and forward buttons on your keyboard?

I'm sorry Compupix. Since I don't use the keyboard shortcut for back/forward I didn't test them before but I'll do it again..
How did your mouse command changes affect the back and forward buttons on your keyboard?
With my M325 programmed as above, ALT+ Left/right still goes forward and backward. If I disable button 4 and 5, ALT+left/right still works but mouse tilt/left right does not. Stands to reason with whatever mouse you are using, this would disable your side buttons which is what you want to do.

@compupix Just for grins and giggles, try XMBC and set it up like mine except disable 4&5. See if it won't accomplish what you want, which is to disable the side buttons. Somehow in the XMBC program the tilt function is tied to buttons 4&5.

As I described above, X-Mouse caused problems when switching windows between MS Word and Sentient Trader. Not only did the window change focus as desired, but Sentient Trader performed a Back at the same time. The X-Mouse solution doesn't work.

But did you try XMBC with the suggestions I stated in my last post? It may not work but it's worth a try.
