Hi there. I customized my Start menu a bit, and I guess Explorer. I don't know where I found the setting. I think I was playing with that "Home" screen (whatever that is).

Point is, this is what my default "Open file" window looks like, and i DO NOT like it. I musta been... too tired that day.
Note the onedrive thing seems to be pinned, expanded and downright cluttering everything

I think it was the same settings config that allowed me to add these icons to the start menu (i could very likely be wrong about that part, but thought it might help).

At this point I'd be happy w/ resetting it to the default config, but I don't know how. Your assistance is much appreciated!

BTW, I checked out some of those WindowBlinds setups the members here have suggested. Wow! Back in the Win XP days I was devoted to Window Blinds! :) Nice. If I ever have time.

Cheers!

Are you using any 3rd party tweakers like Explorer Patcher or StartAllBack or Open Shell?
If so, especially if using Explorer Patcher, there's probably an option to reset to defaults in there somewhere.
Or just uninstall the Explorer Patcher program, maybe.

Hi @Ghot nice to meet you! I am not using any of the software you mentioned. I suppose I've tried to stay away from customization in my olden years. ha! I dunno. There's always something that doesn't jive w/ something else. I'm too ADD and anxious these days.

Perhaps I could try Explorer Patcher to get things back to "normal" and uninstall it? What do you think? I'm open to recommendations. I trust you in here. Nice group of people in my experience. :)

I must reiterate, i'm not at all educated about desktop customization since pre Win7 / Vista. Maybe that's what scared me away... Vista! Yikes!
I really settled into Windows 10, tbh. I do like a lot about Win 11 though. I signed up for that Insiders Preview beta program-- maybe that's where those settings came from!! come to think of it. :annoyed_grunt:

:sigh:
I'll google what you suggested here @Ghot and see what I come up with in the meantime.

Thank you!!

P.S. This is what seems to consume 250% of my time.
Right now... desktop is “like, far out” (in a sense.)

Wait. You're telling me to avoid Explorer Patcher, if I've read you correctly...

No, I was suggesting that IF you were seeing weirdness, then possibly it was due to one of those programs.
From your screenshots, I don;t know what I'm seeing or what you think is wrong with it.

This is what my File Explorer looks like on both Win 10 and Win 11. The only difference between them, is in the area shown by the RED box.

To ME your File Explorer looks weird, but I don't see anything obviously broken.
I'm guessing your screenshot is the "AFTER" pic, but without a "BEFORE" pic...

People do a lot of strange things to Explorer. I'm not sure which part of yours you think is... broken.

I don't think it's broken, the layout was just not as I wanted it. I managed to get the OneDrive to stay collapsed. I think this will do for now. Thank you for your help!

FTR. @Ghot , this is what my file explorer looks like. I dunno. haha. i use a dual pane file explorer most of the time (FreeCommander). Of course that doesn't apply to just the File > Save dialogs, etc.

(arrow pointing to folder which is now collapsed by default. i don't think it's supposed to be in that area by default, but i can live with it.)

Thanks again!

That's actually a really good idea. I use CherryTree for stuff like that.

btw. I did install StartAllBlack. I dunno if it was a tip, but thank you for the exposure. That was basically Win 10 on Win 11!!
which was cool. But i disabled it. I like the Win 11 start menu folder groupings. They must have designed it so old f@rts like me can figure it out and enjoy it. haha!
