Dell Support Assist & Dell PC Software for Dell Inspiron One 2020

Where can I find older versions of Dell Support Assist and other Dell PC related software that is more compatible with the Dell Inspiron 2020? It runs great, is fast, and has no issues running Windows 11 Version 24H2. It's just the most recent Dell software do not work right and act buggy.

I use the SA on-line now, but a search brought up these 3 websites. Let us know how you make out... there are other users out there that may also post just what you need.... Cheers

The current SupportAssist ver 4.0.3 is broken now and won't download updates. Someone on the staff posted on the Dell website that a new version is currently in the works.

Dell SA is bloatware best avoided. I recently fixed a friend's laptop suffering BSODs. The cause was Dell SA and it was hard to remove all traces of it.

I've been a decades long Dell user and haven't used Support Assist in years. It's track record for causing various weird issues is not good. I do however, use Dell Command Update to keep my drivers and bios updated. I began using it with my 2020 Dell and so far, (knock on wood) it has worked flawlessly for me.
Note, that I do not let it run automatically though. I use it as a manual tool. I keep it turned off in my startup apps as well as disabling it's service (Dell Client Management Service) until I want to use it which I do every couple of months. At that time I enable its service, do a manual run, then turn the service off again.
Note: Always suspend BitLocker or Device Encryption encryption on a BitLocker-enabled system before updating bios either manually or through DCU.

@glasskuter . I also have SA installed as our 2 pcs are still under warranty and Tech Support insist that it's installed. I've had no end of problems with version 4 and updates to this version are now auto installed unlike previous versions. Unfortunately Dell Update which I also use instead of SA is being retired at the end of 2024. Tech Support say it "should" still work but will be unsupported. When our pcs are out of warranty I intend to get SA and it's tentacles off the machines and download updates from the Support webpage.

@Mitch, some updates I manually apply as well. Some I will let SA do. Now that my machine is 4 years old, I use it basically as a scanner as a quick and easy way to let me know if new updates are on Dells support site that I haven't applied. I pick and choose the ones I want to manually control installing myself. I usually let SA do driver updates and I do firmware. For the first couple of years I let SA handle the firmware ones, too, and it never failed me. I've had 29 UEFI bios updates since 2020.

The issue with this latest version of SA is that it causes other Dell services to stop working namely Dell Core Client Services. This was identified in Version 4.0 and several updates later it's still happening. @glasskuter I try to use SA as little as possible and mostly use Dell Update for driver updates and also BIOS updates without any problems. Auto Updates to SA are apparently mandatory with no way to manually control them. I fear that if you try to install an older version it may well auto update.

I've had several Dell XPS laptops in the past couple of decades. I don't use Support Assist. When I start up in the morning, I always run Windows Update followed by Dell Command | Update. I like knowing I'm up to date on everything.

@jessewilliams56. I think you might run into problems keeping an older version of Supportassist on that version. On my daughter's PC which had v3 installed it was automatically updated to the latest version in the background. Dell Update/Command is a lightweight alternative without the "optimising" bloatware. Dell Update should still work even though it's being retired (mistakenly IMHO). Mitch.

Personally, I uninstalled both Dell SA and Dell Update from both of my Dell computers when the warranties expired, and before that, I never used them and turned as much off as possible in SA.

SA causes a lot of grief, and even Dell Update can be problematic. I go the Dell Support website once a week, enter my Service Tags, and search for applicable updates manually.

The consensus among the knowledgeable elite in the Dell Forums, e.g., @RoHe, is that BIOS updates, in particular, should only be done using the Flash BIOS pre-boot option. Even that is not flawless if Dell issues, and they have, a faulty BIOS update, but then you know that there was no Dell or other software programs interfering with the BIOS update. I encountered one such faulty update that was finally pulled only after two weeks from its release, despite multiple reports that it was faulty on the Dell Forums. Thanks to @RoHe, I was able to recover the previous BIOS version.

I just updated SupportAssist to version 4.6.2.21388. When I clicked on SupportAssist, I was offered the update. SupportAssist ran to completion with no problems.

FYI, if you just go to the Dell website and download SupportAssist it should be ver 4.6.2 now.

I'm finding no information that Dell plans to deprecate/retire the utility app Dell Command | Update. Where are you getting this information?
