OS
Win 11 x 64 Home on PC . Pro Win 11 x 64 on Surface 9.
Yesterday whilst using the pc the desktop sort of 'blinked' and I found that most of my icons to the net had failed totally. Also I cannot access google, gmail, aol, etc. And photoshop icon does not work, nor does my folders on the desktop, and Kaspersky Total Icon, which I removed a while back when installing Kaspersky Plus, refuses to let me delete it, same for the other icons. A lot of the icons superimposed themselves on top of other, when I dragged one, it moved but left the one hidden below, but dead. Strangely, when I remove desktop picture, the icons that don't work, vanish. User Account wont work to let me add an account.

I tried to add an account but it wont let me. The Geek uninstaller would not open but when U removed the background, it worked? The icons that remain, all seem to work, But not if I have the desktop image - which has been in there for a long time. Changing to a JWST image, the broken cons do not appear, but the working ones remain. I can only assume something has 'broken' in the image. I tried a different image and the dead icons came back, but its a James Webb image so look like I will have to bin them all.

And when typing this and make a typo, I get the whole text covered in red wavy lines, instead of just the wrong word?

Regarding UAC Accounts. I have three, me, wife and daughter, MY grandson created one when he was over last summer but it wont let me create one and I am admin??

Hold SHIFT and restart. You should see some options, select Troubleshoot. Then Select Advanced Startup. After restart you should see a list, select Safe Mode with networking. While in Safe Mode download and install Superantispyware. Update it and then do a complete system scan. It should find tons of malware, let it finish. Then remove everything found and restart to normal mode.

The full syntax of the command to automatically fix all errors is

chkdsk c: /f

To also check and mark out bad sectors so they won't be used again, is

chkdsk c: /f /b /r

You cannot check disk C: while Windows is running. You will be prompted to do it on next restart. Reply yes and restart.

You can run chkdsk c: in running Windows which is read only mode. It's only a quick check without stressing the drive.

Thank you to repliers, I am going to start working on these ideas now. I did a system restore back two days but it made no difference. I do have backups but will have to check last date. JUst to make it clear, only my account is affected. I checked the other two, perfect. And C Drive is SSD.

Another change at some time. Context menus have changed style.

1. Zero errors reported on C Drive

Sorry this is late info but just remembers I saw a missing file report on blue screen when this all began, it went off but I remember it started bc********

My mouse also reports missing files even though I reinstalled its software (Corsair Sabre -Icue) yesterday. Methinks I am going to have to do Windows reset and cloud download (mouse: did two re installs and still reports missing files.) Also it takes nearly 2 mins to open on startup. Sounds like a total reset coming up.

You either got some malware that affects only your account, because this is only infected, or your account is corrupted. In the first case scan for malware and remove all findings. In the second case create a new account, copy all your data from the old one and then delete the old account.

This is what periodic backups are for. If you have a recent backup, save all files you created/modified since the backup and then restore from the backup. Try that before you do a full reset.

OK I'm back, did a reset. I tried my backup, sorry all files were not back up??? Then Restore which said it worked, it didnt. Reset deleted my Kaspersky Plus, which I hurried to get back in. Then it removed Photoshop 2022 (Why???). It told me it had removed all my Nvidia drivers, no it hadnt! It removed my Western Digital software, which came with the 5TB drive, then WD told me but, erm, you don't really need it as the Drive is P&P (der!) anyway, I finally found old emails which gave me a verification code to PS22, went to adobe it swopped it for a licence code which worked at he second attempt. I wrote it down bloody quick just in case.

Now it all back up and running, my desktop is fine, as is my wifes. The daughter can do her own! Just now I was looking for something and thought do a search. Ha! the whole search system in windows had stopped dead. Reboot and its fine. How old do old windows users get before they slowly slide to the flow and an angel picks one up?frustrated-computer-user.jpeg

In order that other posters don't fell into the trap, Reset = make Windows like the first time. No applications installed, maybe not even drivers, you only keep your data. Not really convenient, beware.

I agree with you Spap... I was tempted to do a full clean install. But my daughter has a lot of kit in here, work etc. So, as she was away, I went for the easier option. Some little quirks still going on like search completely stops, reboot and its back, but can go off again. I think it does need a complete blitz. I am running a full scan from Kaspersky Plus at present. I think I am clean but best to check. I am also thinking if the reset told me it had removed apps but in fact only partially. I have just deleted a certain app that remained after reset but said was gone. I'll clean up pc as best I can then put it back in as it as a few features I like to use.

My boot up is relatively slow, and my desktop, when it appears, comes on screen, seconds vanish then comes up properly.

One cosmetic question. MY start menu when activated, is on the left of the screen. But my wifes start menu is in the bottom centre. Ideas?

If I remember correctly, I now use StartAllBack. You can right click on the Taskbar and select properties. There should be an option to move the Start menu.

Since you already lost all applications, I recommend to backup your data and clean install. To save you time there is a trick. Just boot to Windows Setup USB and install Windows in the Windows partition (usually the larger) without formatting or deleting any partitions. This will automatically backup your data to Windows.old folder and do a clean installation. After back in Windows, install the drivers and then retrieve your data from the Windows.old folder. Done it many times.
